I use Hoppes 9 solvent and oil. From the responses, I may have to give Breakfree a shot.

When you say, "Is cleaning your gun twice a year good enough?", I hope you're cleaning after every use - barrel, slide, etc. and not putting it up without the basic cleaning routine....

I was quoting rimfire,22 about the "twice a year" cleaning. I clean mine after every 500 rounds or so (every 2 weeks). I do a "complete" cleaning as you said - barrel, slide, frame. So is this excessive?

I hate breakfree. Too thick, too hard to get off. It's not like it was developed because army weapons developers thought it was the best, it was just less to carry and cheaper.

And don't use a melonite finish as an excuse to not take proper care of your weapon.

I use Eezox as a CLP, but Hoppes works good as a cleaner and mobil 1 works great to lubricate and prevent rust.

There are a number of very good gun oils on the market and you'll hear as many opinions - some extreme. Just about any 'gun' oil will work fine. Add me to the list who uses BreakFree CLP.

I would say use breakfree or mil-tech. I'm in the Army when we are in garison we store our weapons in our arms room for months some time with out touching them. We also use breakfree CLP on our 105mm howitzer which sits outside all day everyday, and all that thing is is a big gun, and the CLP protects it well.

I live in Hawaii and I have not had a bit of rust on my guns. I use corrosionX. I may want to give breakfree a shot
