Looking at that barrel, the only thing I can think of is that you got some chemical on the steel that was corrosive.

I have a 2002 made XD40 Service and have carried it extensively. I have had it out in rain and horrible hot dusty, dirty conditions and have not been the best about cleaning it up. I also live where its hellishly hot and very humid most of the year and it rains alot (Houston, TX). If a metal object does not rust here...its a total miracle.

I fail to see how, even in my most neglectful state, I could have gotten the barrel on my XD40 to rust like that all on its own. I'd have to pour salt water or battery acid on it to get results like that. Amazing.

With just a simple wipedown with BreakFree, I have not seen a speck of rust in 4 1/2 years. You'd think with the treatment and climate, I'd have a rusty pipe, but not at all.

I honestly don't know what some of you are doing to your XDs to rust them this badly. If I can half-ass oil mine with a product I get at Wal Mart and keep rust away...theres somthing really wrong you all are doing to create that kind of rust on an XD.

Did I get the only XD that did not rust?

No, you didn't get the only non-rusty XD. But a lot of people did get them that were. Mine is one. I had barrel rust, but not to this extent. I stopped using Disotec XFR by blue wonder and the rust issues also stopped.

I'm glad he posted. Maybe others who are using the same gun care products will check more carefully. I don't see how his report is any different from any other rust, FTF, FTE, or broken part report we see here. Basically, it's a heads up. Personally, I would suspect the products he has been using since, while Quality Control at SA is somewhat suspect, I would think that since the barrels are all made from the same alloy, there is most likely another reason this happened to his and not to ours.

FWIW my dad put his Winchester 94 in his attic in the 1960's after cleaning and oiling it up and never got it out again to check it over. He died 2 years ago and I got it out and checked it out, probably 40 years later, without cleaning or oiling in all those 40 or so years + being stored in a humid attic. Perfect, like the day it was made. He always used 3 in One oil on his guns. Now, I do too.

I don't know about babying it, but I think some get obsessive about cleaning, I clean the bore to get out the copper or lead, then I get the powder and primer residue off and put some oil on. I would say, don't go crazy cleaning your guns, there is such a thing as "clean enough" and I think if you degrease it, you have gone too far. If it can't function at 100% with even the tiniest bit of dirt in it, what good is it?

Even Springfield does not know for sure. In any event, there is no rust issue on mine The following is the email I got from Springfield yesterday:

In regards to the finish on your pistol….unfortunately the production date isn’t enough to go on. The changeover was ongoing and your pistol is right in the middle of that changeover. Production date is 12-7-05.

Let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Yep, and if that's the only part of the weapon that rusted, well what does that tell you.

Springfield would have resolved it for you. You didn't have to sell it unles you just didn't like the weapon.

Just unacceptable for a gun like this to rust so easily, shame on Springfield! Liked the feel of the gun but its obviously not made of quality materials nor an appropriate finish.

That's what you get for using water based products on your gun.
