after reading more in this post, I remember that the person who contacted springfield about the disotech lube, they told them that something in that could potentially lead to rust with the xd's finish.

On breakfree clp... tests have been done, and this has proven to be one of the best protections against rust. I use it on my guns now.

+1 on Breakfree CLP. Just make sure you don't put too much of it.

The soap and water routine is especialy usefull if you want to thouroghly clean a gun.

Just be certain to dry thouroghly then lightly oil.

I've used kerosene plent of times to clean guns. Especially AK's. Very cheap, and leaves a protective film. I've cleaned Glock, Walther, and SA frames in the sink with hot water, toothbushes, and dawn. Works great, just make sure they're dried and lubed after. I'm not quite brave enough to clean the slides with water though.

We used dry cleaning solvent and then lightly oiled our weapons in the Nav. Nothing works better at taking off residue. As a civvy, I use Hoppes 9 and oil. No problems with any of my weapons.

The thing is once the finish wears off a non stainless barrel it can rust VERY easily no matter what brand. Stainless can definitely rust too, but not as esily as non stainless. I'm not saying everyone's rusts as it depends on how it's protected with oil products or even humidity conditions but even Kart barrels which are arguably some of the best out there rust quickm much quicker than the stainless brands.

I believe all pistols got the new finish in April of 06. You can call Springfield and they can tell you whn your pistol was made and what finish it has.

Me too. I have used Break Free since I was in the Army 20 years ago. I have never had rust on any of my weapons.
