You cleaned it after every range session.
But did you wipe it down with a light coating of some sort of oil?
I find it hard to believe that anything would rust like that, if it was properly oiled.

With regard to the original poster. Since you have already sold the XD why are you telling us abut your problem with your XD? You were not happy with your XD and sold it. What can we do to help you now? Had you come to the forum with the rust problem before selling it we might have then been able to help remedy the situation. But you have already sold the XD and are now simply whining about how dissatisfied you are. I don't understand what you hoped this post would accomplish?

I have had my XD40 Tac for about 6 months. I use kerosene, soap and water and Birchwood Gun Scrub to clean it and my other guns (up to 60 yrs old). I also make certain they are properly dried then re oiled. None of my guns show rust.

The soap and water routine is especialy usefull if you want to thouroghly clean a gun.

Just be certain to dry thouroghly then lightly oil.

I bought my XD 40 SC back in July of 2004. I've put about 1,000 rounds through it and have recently been using it for my EDC. Mine still looks brand spanking new, minus a little wear from holstering.

I've also cleaned mine after every trip to the range and made sure it was oiled up after. Never one speck of rust.

It's all in how you take care of it.

I also store it in "bore store" bags. These bags are awesome. They have silicone on the inside which does wonders for guns, they promote circulation of air (a.k.a. breathing), and are padded to prevent scratching. I strongly believe that has a lot to do with why I haven't had any problems. Highly recommended.

I store ALL of my guns in these cases, my XD 45acp still looks like it did the day I brought it home

Dang, now that is Old School. I've never heard of using kerosene on a gun.

I haven't used water on any firearm since I was in Basic Training and we ran near boiling water through those old M16-A1's. I'm amazed anyone coming out of Basic can qualify with them from the hell those rifles are subjected to just in the cleaning. We used a drill and chamber brush for inspections.

Happened to mine when I first got the blue wonder "gun cleaning kit". Barrel rusted up about like that picture. Sent the bottle of lube in, got a replacement. Threw the replacement away. I hate to give bad pr about blue wonder, but the only product of theirs that touches my xd is armadillo coat. 1 strike and you're out when it comes down to damaging my property. I can say that the armadillo works great. I always give the slide a coating of it about every 5th trip to the range. Fingerprints don't show up much, it doesn't rust, and helps prevent holster wear (until it's worn off, of course).

Thumbs up

I hose my guns down with WD40, then blow dry with an air compressor. A couple of SMALL drops of Hopps here and there on wear points then done.

To be honest, I have seen all kinds of "Wonder Products" come and go. But I just to what has always worked and don't worry about it.

My father taught me that once a gun is broken in, the less oil the better off you will be because oil will attract dirt that could cause problems, and to NEVER use any sort of "High Flash point solvent" like brake cleaner.
What happens is the oils that soaked into the metal are removed, leaving it unprotected.

YMMV

Unless your purpose is to remove all oil. Then I highly recommend non-chlorinated brake cleaner MELTS oil, grease, cosmo, baked on crud, chicken fat, you name it....
