New XD45acp rusting
Hello all,
I have a brand new unfired XD45ACP service which is rusting in the trigger lock pins above the trigger guard and the mag release pin. I have sprayed it with WD-40, coated it with militec-1 and outers gun oil and also sprayed it with sheath. The rust keeps resurfacing. granted I have done a lot of dryfire practice with it because I can't get to the range yet with my schedule. I figure with the liberal coatings of oils it should have rectified the problem. This XD was shipped out of the factory 4/06 so I would imagine it is a later model with the melonite finish. Has anyone had a similar problem or able to offer a solution? So far I enjoy the feel and can't wait to put some rounds downrange. I have been a GLOCK/1911 guy for years and surprised myself when I opted to try this new XD out. Paid $480.00 + tax.. Which seemed like a great buy considering all of the awards and praise the XD45 has gotten in all of the gun magazines. Also, I would appreciate input on night sights for it and a good(cheapest) source to buy additional magazines for it. I have seen mags from $22-$26.00. Thanks in advance. |

pin discoloration
I seem to recall a similar problem earlier. it turned out the rust wasn't rust but a coloring they put on the pins.

the coloring on the pins is black oxide which is an oxidation (rusting) of the metal under controlled circumstances. Sometimes it just won't protect depending on the particular batch of mat'l due to diff. chemical properties. Also if a person who touches it has a particularly acidic or akaline body chemistry, the body oils can rust the metal quite easily.
The only real option is replacing the pins. Not a big deal to do it. Ajames probably has the complete listing of sizes needed and they are available at most fastener houses like Fastenall or McmasterCarr and sometimes even at your local ACE hardware.

I got the TRUglo TFO (tritium fiber optic) from James (www.xd-hs2000.com) for around $100 with free installation. I think PistolGear.com has some decent prices on mags. That seems to be where everyone gets them. I've order other stuff from Pistol Gear, good service.
I remember the thread about the pin problem. Most everybody had it, nothing to worry about. Welcome to the forum!

The reddish color on the pins is nothing to worry about. I've had my XD for over 2 years and its been that way since day one when I brought it home. Not much you can do about it unless you replace them. But it doesnt hurt the gun to leave them there.
