My XD pins have always had a reddish color. With the posts here, I do not worry about it.

My humble opinion: Yuck! Worry less about rust, and more about all that gunk yer leavin' on yer gun! First off, put the WD-40 back in the garage...it ain't for guns (despite what the can says); leaves a waxy residue. Second, don't use much of ANY gun oil or what-not. Oil traps grit and dirt. Other than on the slide rails and the bore, you want as little oil as you can possibly apply, and on the exterior all it takes is a quick wipe-down with a silicone-oil-impregnated wipe (or a reg'lar gun-oil wipe), leaving so little oil behind that you really shouldn't be able to even see it. And for the works (firing pin tunnel, etc.), oil lightly when you do a detail strip-and-clean (I do one every few thousand rounds), not at all in between.

Using too much oil and goo is what keeps gunsmiths fully employed. I'm still using the same small bottle of gun oil I bought when I was a kid, and I've got 50-year-old guns that look (and shoot) like new.

Damn straight!!!!!! I worry more about improving my shooting skills with my XD instead of nitpicking. The XDs are combat weapons and should be treated as such. Shoot them as much as you can keep them as clean as you can and they'll be happy.

I know most of you have already seen this but here it goes again.

Melonite

This is just speculation. I think the plum reddish color seen on the pins and some of the interior parts are the case hardening AKA melonite. My Makarov's safety is the same color and it is some type of case hardening. When bought my XD-45ACP I thought it might have been rusting before I bought it - but then I thought about it. Too bad they did not sell a unfinished XD just in melonite - I think the gun's finish would look like a smooth but tarnished aged copper/bronze kettle.

This might explain the sudden outbreak of rust mine suffered after I took a friend shooting...
