Ahhhh, that wonderful rust

Well. I went shooting last weekend, mainly because I was bored and had not murdered any poor, defenseless paper targets lately.

So, I hang up my first unlucky victim...I mean..target, unlock the case, place said firearm on the table in front of me, load my first mag, pick up XD to slide mag in...WTF? RUST?!?! AWWWWW!!!!

So now I'm thinkin' it's time to coat the slide. Durakote seems to get plenty of good reviews, and apparently this Melonite stuff must be decent. I thought I read something about Armadillo? Surely not the place in Texas? Does Melonite also come in different colors, like the Durakote?

And don't call me Surely

"Melonite" can only be done at the factory apparently, so count that option out. However, you can have SA "armory-kote" it. There are LOTS of other options out there for finishing, durakote being the most popular around these parts. People like to hard-chrome thier handguns too if they do a lot of holstering/unholstering.

I do pretty much zero holstering/unhostering, unless I'm wearing it around the house.

Does hard-chroming give it a chromed look, or is that just a term?

Hard chroming can be done to any degree of reflectivity, but I like it best when done to a satin finish. It looks a lot like blasted stainless steel if done right.

But for your XD slide, check out Wilson Combat's finishing service:

All weapons rust...especially if you ignore them for any length of time...I have a Sig 226 Navy with the "Maritime" finish...bought the gun in January, finger abused the puppy for about a week, stripped it, cleaned it, lubed it, and packed her away in my safe as a "queen". Took her out a couple of weeks ago, and yikes....rust...so much for the Maritime finish...a little Gunzilla, and she's back to new again.

Call Springfield. I had rust on my XD-40 slide and barrel. Sent only those two parts (much easier to send and cheaper) and the re-coated both. They look good and much better than the original finish.

The ArmorTuff sounds pretty good. Then again, it's a puff piece on their web site, so it will sound good no matter what. Anyone have their slide done using this method a while ago? Stand up ok?

That may be, but it doesn't mean I like it. Chicks supposesdly "dig" body damage on a Jeep, but mine has none.

Cost ya anything? Did they use the new Melonite or the same stuff as all the other XD's?

Will,... do you have a bigger file of your Avatar? I would like to post it as my desktop. That is funnier than hell. If you do, can you email it to Xatashooter@comcast.netX (drop X's)
