Their replies to my emails just dont make sense. I bought MY XD40 service in June/06 and the testfire package says October/05, yet their emails to me say that my XD was manufactured in MARCH/06.
The case, and the spent shell package have the correct serial #, along with the gun.

SA told me tht my XD does have the NEW Finish on it. Confused to say the least.....

Scratched up the slide a little today. A little of the front sight too. This is with my XD9 Service with the Melonite finish. It is pretty dry in Colorado but I will see how it holds up.

My xd9sc has the new finish and still looks good. I wish they could have done the barrel in the new finish as well. It is starting to scratch. I also notice a small thin silver line on the bottom of the slide rail near the muzzle. My xd service that I used to have, God rest it's soul, had the old finish on it and chipped off like spray paint. I was not very happy. Everytime I took it out of the case there was a new chip on it. When I traded it in the guys at the store were trying to say I sprayed rustoleum on it! I bought it used so it may have had spray paint on it.

I have the old finish and it is wearing down quite nicely. I see it as character; just like the dents in my Jeep, the holes in my 501's, and my scars from a misfired 40mm grenade.

Without the wear of age we would never apreciate the beauty of youth

Unless you dropped/scratched it on rocks/stones, most likely whatever material that hit the slide has been deposited onto your gun. I have a 1911 that has been Melonited and this is what I have found to happen. Melonite is VERY hard. Harder than anything that one will encounter in everyday life except stones/ceramics.

Is there a way to tell manufacture date before you buy? (date stamped on box, test fire date accurate?)

BTW, Melonite is a process not a finish. The steel is treated to diamond hardness to a few thousandths thickness. Usually a finish is then applied to the steel (parkerized, polymer coated, etc). This is why some GLOCK's appear green and some black. The finish can wear but the metal will still be intact.

It makes the pistol incredibly durable! I would not worry about dropping it.

regards

Mine is an XD-40 with serial number US266XXX and is confirmed by SA to have the melonite finish. SA also told me the month they changed over was April '06.
