I bought my XD .40 in Aug. How can I tell if mine has the better finish or not?

Is it rusting? if it is, then its the older finish...Aside from that, i have no idea how to tell.

Can someone please post a picture of the Melonite next to the brunuriurinal?

Check the date on the envelope with the empty shell casing that came in your package. That should give you the date on which it was tested, which would be close to the manufacturing date.

Thats strange. This is the reply I got from SA in the middle of August:

At this time Springfield Armory has not officially announced any plans to extend the melonite to models other than the XD .45 ACP. The number of pistols with a ‘rust issue’ is extremely small when compared to the number of pistols that have never had any rusting what so ever. As long as you properly maintain your XD, you shouldn’t see any rust. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Thank you,

So, if they are all shipping with Melonite in May, why do these replies conflict? Was your post in regard only to the .45's?

Odd, very odd.

Would be nice if we knew for sure. Is there any way to tell just by looking at the gun? I want to pick up a SC9mm at the next gun show.

well, the reply says that springfield had not "officially" anounced its conversion to Melonite. Doesnt mean that they hadnt already...

I think at that time it was a CYA situation...until they (and their dealers) had depleted their supply of the standard coated parts and slides.

I'd like to know one way or the other.
I'm about to buy an XD9 Service and I'd rather have an all black finish, but I don't want to deal with the rusting issues.

ARin...could you forward Mr. Moe's response to Ms. Oleson and see what she says?

i'd say forward the one email to the other and vice versa, and cc yourself to see what they hash out.
