That's interesting, but I'd sure like to know more accurately when they did the change.
My single "Barney Fife" fired bullet casing that came with my XD9SubCompact was dated May 28, 2006, so it may or may not be one of the first Melonites.
I bought it from a large dealer on July 4, 2006.

I'd sure like to know... just for grins.

does anyone have a 2005 XD? if so, would you say that the slide and frame are the same color. i think the melonite is darker but because i've never seen an older XD other than in pictures, i can't tell.

At any rate, as mentioned before, all mine look exactly the same in finish. They match my 45acp. My subby is the only one i have that was purchased in may but it too looks the same. All others have been purchased in June or later. thank god

How do you know what year your XD is. I mean does it say on the side?? Is there a code? I have one I just bought about a month ago. It looks like a much better finish than my old 40 service.

Went by a local gun shop and they had a XD9 with the melonite finish. The guy said he received it in May of this year. The melonite finish is more shiny than the original finish. Just hold a XD45 up next to your older XDs and you'll see the difference.

OK, lemme see if I got this straight: all XDs shipped since May are melonite, but then no, they're not, except that yes they are, maybe, we think...kind of...not. And no, we don't have any records....

Jeez Louise, Springfield!!!! Get with the frickin' program!!!! Writing one quick letter (to the Cody Arms Museum), I can find out whether the smith who assembled my 1917 Winchester model 1894 was right- or -left-handed, and what his cousin's girlfriend's mother's middle initial was.

I want to believe in melonite like I used to want to believe in Santa Claus. And once I see an XD ad that says "Now with melonite!" I'll believe it...if the test cartidge date is later than the date of that ad. Until then...yer missin' a sale here, SA! Tick-tock!

Springfield doesn't want to mention it to much at this point because they don't want to devalue any of the guns that their distributors still have that were made before May. Heck, they probably shouldn't have mentioned it all until they were pretty sure all the old stock had been sold off. I'm sure that's why there's been no official announcement.

does this envelope come with all Xd's? Is it supposed to remain with the package when sold by a dealer, or is the dealer allowed to discard the item?

I bought an XD 45 Tact about 2 to 3 weeks ago, and it came with no such envelope, nor did it come with any type of handbook. only paper it came with was the warranty card and a small safety book, and the xd manual.

Personally I'd like to have gotten that spent casing, with the paper containing my firearms born on date....

also, did you guys recieve anything back after you mailed your warranty card off, like any kind of notice that the reg info was received by Springfield?

Both my XDs came with the empty shell with the date. No, never received anything back from SA for my warranty cards. As a practical matter, I've heard from a couple of dealers (I was looking at used XDs), that SA honors most mfg defect requests regardless of reg., although may take a while

I believe the test casing is included by SA because, IIRC, a very few state or municipality laws require an FFL to retain a casing fired from the gun. If the state or municipality where you bought yours has such a law, then you wouldn't have received the casing. Otherwise you really should have gotten it, although there's no law that says ya gotta.

When I bought my XD9 the dealer tried to sell me the display model (at full retail, of course), but I nixed that, and asked him to go out back and find me a fresh, unopened box, then open it in front of me. I'm just funny that way. It's the easiest way to be sure you're gettin all the goodies it's supposed to come with, plus there's nothin like that new gun smell....
