Fight Rust the Future Way.
Hey guys,
I have a little tip I found that may help keep you guns rust free, possibly for decades with little effort. Its Silica Gel and it absorbs moisture. They also make ones that absorb oxygen, but its highly toxic and I dont recomend it. You can also find some packets of silica gel in DVD player boxes, video camera boxes, and so on. An other effect you'll notice is that it absorbs odor. Leaving your guns with a neutral smell (no more solvent stink) My uncle used to work for these guys as a chemical engineer, so he was able to cut me a deal, becuse I didnt need that much, they gave me a sample pack of about 15 smaller packets. My guns come out of the case completely odorless and perfectly dry. Its great for storing guns over a long period of time. The company only states its life span is a few weeks, but my uncle says in a confined space it'll absorb for years. It's peak effect dies off after about 6 weeks though. It's important to mention that it shuld be replaced, every year or so, because the moisture isnt gone, its just absorbed into a medium other than the air in the gun case, or fire safe. http://www.agmcontainer.com/desiccan...nt_sorb-it.htm hope it helps, andy |

It'd be wise to also mention that you can get similar results (though, not as well) with active carbon (charcol). Something you can buy at a fish tank supply store for realativly cheap. AC absorbs gases and organic materials very well. Its excellent for controling odor, but its not clear its effects on moisture or oxygen, the main causes in oxydation.

I have some friends who use them as well as I. Being a network engineer I get them in with all kinds of hardware. You can use them for a long time.

Come and see some of my service mach. guns Packerfan !!! With the humidity here and the salt wather douching that these guns get you will get a whole new understanding of RUST !!! Silica packs work well, we get the real large ones to go in our deployment pelican cases, they are about 4-5 inches long and at least 3 inches wide... all silver in color with a window that changes color to pink when they have absorbed their limit of moisture.

Really? I was born up-state... Heard of Saranac Lake? Moved to FL when I was 4 but have a whole lot of family further north still... most of them are about 5 miles from the boarder.

We had dessicant beads to dehydrate the air we compressed. The way that we got the water out of the beads was by heating it to around 300-400F via automatic heater with about 40# of air running through it. I wonder if you could dehydrate the dessicant packs the same way by baking it in the oven.
