Been waiting for months to buy a 9MM. Have been lurking on glock talk board a while, and was convinced the G19 was my gun. Went to range to rent a glock, but they did not have any. Range owner convinced me to rent an XD. That gun hit exactly where I aimed. Amazing - even for a newbie like me. I'm about ready to forget the glock and go buy the XD.
My only remaining hesitation is the finish issue: I'm a typical busy guy, so I may not clean my pistol immediately after returning from range. I plan to use CCW, mostly in car (I am licensed to do so). I may also carry outdoors, possibly in a fanny pack or a holster. I don't think the weapon will be touching my skin much - don't plan to sweat all over it.
If I knew the 9MM XD would get the melonite finish in the near future, I'd wait for it. But since it appears we don't know when/if that will happen, perhaps I should just jump in now? Should I be concerned about rust? How often must I clean/oil/inspect the weapon (in addition to cleaning after range visits)? Have you had problems with rust?
PS: The range has a NIB XD 9MM, all black, mid sized (4" barrel I believe) for $459, which seems like a fair price.
You can also get the Bi-Tone with a stainless steel slide. It can rust too if you don't keep it wiped with an oily cloth or silicone cloth from time to time but rust is seldom a problem with stainless under normal conditions.
If you take care of the slide like any blued gun, you will not have a rust problem. My wife and I use sentry products on our XD's, and no rust to date. It holds up well, and dries so there is no oily film. Also their lubes are a dry film, and work well, they don't cause crud to stick to the moving parts. Just my .02.

The XD does not have a blued slide. The XD's finish has proven to be hit and miss at best, faulty at worst. Springfield will refinish it at no cost if yours proves to be faulty.
Please don't paint with your broad brush on a subject you don't know enough about. Why would we have an entire forum dedicated to the issue if it wasn't an issue?

There are pleanty of options to prevent rust on an XD 9mm. Gunzilla is supposed to be an outstanding cleaner and rust preventer. BreakFree Collector is my personal favorite for my 18 month old XD 40 service pistol. I use just about every day for a full shift, in rain, snow, cold, heat - and, yes, I've sweated on it! No rust anywhere on the gun. Blue Wonder is another product that shows promise. Of course, you can always send the slide away and have AJames work his magic on it.....
Don't let the issue scare you off. If you like the gun, buy it. You sure won't be sorry.

If you want the XD and want the comfort of knowing it won't rust on you get one and spend <100 bucks and refinish it. OR, just take your chances and hopefully you don't get a ****ty one. Mine has been okay, but still rusts with imaculate care.
My XD45 is in my range bag and has been in the trunk for all of 9 days.. there is very little if any lube left on the gun b/c I shot over 1000 rounds in two days and left it in the trunk since. it has rained here almost none stop for about 5-6 days and I left it puposely to see if it would rust... result; not a speck.. now she is getting a good scrub down.. i bet if I tried this with my XD9 or .40 it might be a diff result.

One thing I noticed is that when I handle any of my firearms and don't wipe them down with a cloth then I end up with some surface rust. Even if you oil them I feel you still need the get all the oil from your hands off them as well. I keep my 9 and 40 XDs in the original case with a small cotton towel or wash cloth under and over the slide portion. Maybe this helps to absorb some moisture that may occur around the pistol, I don't know, but I don't have rust issues with the 9 and 40. The XD45 I just throw in the case as is.
If you want rust resistance and a great pistol, pass over the XD9 and go for the XD45.

Or, use a prduct like Break Free "Collector" or Gunzilla. Either of these prevents runst. I like the Break Free product because it also prevents fingerprints and you can safely shoot through it (not sure about Gunzilla - but I believe that also allows you to shoot through without having to clean it out first).
