Hey Everyone,
This is just an FYI. I emailed SA asking if they had a date for when they would start putting the Melonite coating on all the firearms as opposed to only the 45's. Here is there response:

Hi TJ,
At this time Springfield Armory has not officially announced any plans to extend the melonite to models other than the XD .45 ACP. The number of pistols with a ‘rust issue’ is extremely small when compared to the number of pistols that have never had any rusting what so ever. As long as you properly maintain your XD, you shouldn’t see any rust. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

That's bad news because I really want to buy a XD9Tactical length for shooting competition, but don't want to take the gamble of getting a rust-bucket or even a pseudo-rust-bucket.

Heard lots about this issue. I collect military long arms from WW1, WW2, and assorted wars and conflicts up 'till 1960 or so. Some of those I get are in pretty rough shape - rusted, pitted, etc. After I clean them up, I was looking for a way to keep them looking decent. I started using a product called "Collector" from BreakFree. This is the same stuff our military uses for long-term storage of weapons. I figured, "If it works on these old wardogs, wonder what it will do for my pistols?", so I started using it on them as well. I've had my XD 40 service pistol for 18 months now. I fire it at least once a month (field stripped, cleaned, lubed after every shoot) and carry it on duty in my Blackhawk CQC open holster every time I go to work (at least 4 days a week). It's been rained on, snowed on, sweated on - you name it. To date, there is no rust anywhere on the pistol. The product is great - requires no cleaning prior to a shoot (you can shoot through it, so I use it on the barrel - inside and out - and on all exposed areas). It's not oily or greasy - leaves nothing on the metal or polly, but it resists fingerprints. If you’re worried about rust, you might want to give it a try – it’s worked out great for me.
