If it's new it should have the Melonite finish. If it does, then the finish is pretty much bombproof. Same thing as Glock's Tennifer. There are a lot of threads on this.

IF it doesn't then it's pre early 2006. Call Springfield and find out.

Hey! Who brought this thread back to life?

I did contact them and checked the date it was test fired -- August 2005. Not sure why the gun was sitting in the store for a year since they are a pretty high volume place. Maybe they don't cycle their merchandise like a supermarket.

No issues so far, but I will probably spend the 200 bucks to get it hard chromed anyway just for pure pimpticality. Even though I compete with it (term used loosely) -- deep down, it's a toy, and hard chrome looks great.

Had the same situation, except mine was from 2002!! Thankfully, Academy Sports exchanged it for a Melonite finished one. It's just peaceof mind and I didn't like the fact of a new 5 year old pistol.

The other reason why I was secretly glad I didn't have the new finish is that it's going to shame me into doing some extensive dry fire practice this spring. Even though I just want to throw money at it for fun, if I'm using the gun enough that I can put some serious wear through the Brunial, I won't feel as guilty about modifying the damn thing.

How can one tell?

I bought mine Friday, so it should be newer, I'd hope!

About the only way is to call SA and have them lookup the Serial#. They can tell when it was manufactured and who they shipped it to. It's was suprisingly easy to talk to a Rep and they were quite helpful.

You can also tell if you have the two side by side. The melonite is darker and a little smoother in appearance. The brunial tends to be a chalkier gray/black color.

Also if there is a S&W M&P around, you can compare it to that finish as it has the melonite treatment.

as a quickie, check your test fire shell. and verify with a call to SA.

NP3 from Robar.

Stuff just wipes right off of it...basically nothing sticks to it.

The downside?...it takes about 6 weeks to get your gun back from them.

They do really good work so they stay really busy.

Hard chrome looks like a chrome bumper on a truck.
