So if Springfield offer Hard chrome as an option then Hard Chrome finish would be legal for IPSC production? Right?

From the IPSC Rule Book:

Original parts and components offered by the OFM as standard equipment, or as an option, for a specific model handgun on the IPSC approved handgun list are permitted, subject to the following:
  1. Modifications to them, other than minor detailing, are prohibited. Prohibited modifications include changing the original color and/or finish of a handgun, and/or adding stripes or other embellishments.
  2. Base plates and/or any other devices which provide additional ammunition capacity (e.g. "+2" magazine extensions), are prohibited.
  3. Sights may be trimmed, adjusted and/or have sight black applied.

Even if it is offered as a finish option? So If I order the gun with the finish from Springfield I am breaking the "production" rules?

They need to go with the USPSA rulings on that one.

In the US it doesn't matter as far as ever heard. Internationally it might. You could go to the IPSC Village and post the question there.

Not really worried about it I just find it facinating the differences in rules in all types of competitions.

I had NP3 done on my XD 45 Service. In the Phoenix area call Robar gun shop. I can not think of anything better out there for rust protection and wear. I also have a 20 year old Sig 220 with NP3 and there is no sign of wear.

I have heard a great number

....of positive things about Tripp Research hard chroming....since I don't wish to change the "tactical" look of my XD's, with a bright look at my pimped out pistol, is there such a thing as a black hard chroming?
