XD rust compared to other makes/models of firearms?

Another question I have. Why is the XD supposedely more rust prone than other models of guns besides glocks? My Sig P226 hasn't had any problems, I take great care of it. But has the rust issue been blown out of proportion? To me, it seems like a legit problem with a lot of concern! Why don't I hear of other guns rusting like I am the XD!!?? Do other guns have different parts or finishes that prevent rust a little better? excluding a glock. thanks!

if you clean, oil and take care of it ever-time you shot it their should NOT be any kind of rust on it! and I have never here of the XD been more rust prone than other models . that's just BS! anything metal will rust if you dont take care of it!!

that was my initial view of all this too. But after reading a lot of people say they do take care of them, and still have rust, I've come to believe that SA has a legit problem with the XD's, but I'm still curious if other guns have the same problems, or to see what is it about the XD slide and other parts that seem to rust so easily and frequently?

I noticed that my RRA Entry Tactical had a speck of rust on it when I took it out today. I blame myself, not Rock River. I neglected the gun and did not keep it oiled. Regardless of price or the guns "intend use", they all rust is neglected.

I've had my XD rust and I check it weekly at a minimum and give it a lube rubdown if it's looking "dry". It is a problem with XDs and that's why the new .45s have melonite on them. Anyway, I've also had my 10/22 that lives in my truck rust plenty of times due to a leaky back window . It's never been anything that bad that I couldn't just wipe it off, but rust due to storage in an extremely wet environment.

I look at this way. My XD has never had a rust problem. Sometimes it sits in the car for a few days or a week. Many times it's on me in the summer. I wipe it down once a week at a minimum with CLP. I also use armadillo. No rust. With that said though, I see too many posts about rust to discount that the older XDs (mine included) are more susceptible to rust than many other guns. My Beretta has not been nearly as "babied" as my XD and no rust, anywhere - and no worries of it rusting.

During the days of the HS2000, were people as tough on the finish and it susceptibility to rust? I don't recall it being an issue then. Is it because back then it was a $250 gun and now it is a $500 gun?

I look at it this way, with all of my guns. If my gun has rust, it is my problem and my fault. Unless many with the same gun has the exact same rust patterns, it is my fault and something that I need to deal with.

If you want to avoid rust, be safe and send it off to AJames or Rich for a quick clear coat. That will give you a low maintenance firearm.

There are three XD's 'in the family.' My old one has been carried & shot extensively, worn around the farm during summer chores, been soaked along with yours truly during rainstorms, sweated all over, dragged along on hunts in all weather, and been carried alot as a duty gun too. The other two haven't been used quite as hard but have been stored a lot. No rust on any of them. We don't live by the sea here, but we have beaucoup heat & humidity.

When they get dirty, we clean them with Hoppe's #9. They get a coat of oil immediately afterward- whatever oil that's handy. It is usually Hoppe's Oil, but I have also used 3 in 1, chainsaw bar oil, and motor oil. All my other guns get similar treatment. No rusty XD's. I think that's relevant to this discussion. I learned a long time ago to keep 'em clean & oiled when they're not being used, and it has worked across the board regardless of brand, model or finish.

This is not to say that I have never found rust on one of my guns. Remington rifles and shotguns with the nice blue finish (before the "870 Express" days) will rust about as fast as any gun on the planet. On those occasions when I did find a little rust, I cleaned it up. It would never have occurred to me to ask a manufacturer to refinish a gun *for free*, because I let it rust. It is well known that I am no "Springfield Cheerleader"- but the fact that they are refinishing any of them for free, speaks awfully well of their customer service effort.

I see this as one of those "absolutes" of firearms ownership. Rust will happen with any gun, if you do not work to prevent it.
