Help!!! Rust!!!

I took some advise I saw posted and tried cleaning my xd in the dishwasher. I just now took it out and it has rust spots on the barrel, slide and even the rails on the frame! What's the easiest way to get the rust off? I'm new to guns so try to keep it simple. I tried serching the site, but had no luck, thanks for your help. I think I'm gonna throw up.

First of all, don't EVER EVER EVER put it in the dishwasher to clean it again (if you haven't figured that out yet).

Try putting some lubricating oil on it, let it sit for a while and then rubbing it off with a cloth.

If that doesn't work, try some Blue Wonder, that stuff is great!

If that doesn't work, then try steel wool...very gently.

Yeah I know a lot of people do it but I just could never bring myself to put one of my firearms through the dishwasher.

Hence the term "DISHwasher", not "PISTOLwasher"

Lumberjack - Thanks for the advice! Blue wonder cleaner and armadillo ordered. I guess I'll just keep it oiled up real good until the blue wonder arrives.

To the rest of ya - Didn't your mom's teach ya that if you can't say something nice......

I realize it was a mistake, even though several posters on here have done it. Not sure how they keep theirs from rusting.

Did you run it through the whole drying cycle too? That might be your problem.

Yeah.....that's probably it. I guess the blow dryer and a quick oiling would have done the trick. I am dumb.

Didn't realize it would rust that fast. I am still....not slick.

For the first time, I recently submerged my slide in a bowl of hot soapy water and let it soak for about 10 mins, then I took it out, scrubbed it real good and rinsed it with hot water then took the blowdryer to it. No rust problems at all. Is it because maybe I'm lucky and my finish isn't faulty, or is it because I had armadillo on the slide previously and the water pretty much just ran off most of the slide. i coated inside and outside the slide with armadillo, everywhere except the firing pin. I made sure to pull that in and out several times during the drying process, and swab it with a q-tip. I then made sure to put some oil in there and work the firing pin in and out, just to get it spread around and protect from any water that may be in there still.

I was very suprised that the armadillo was still on my slide. I figured I was in need of another coat since I have had it on there about 2 months, and have cleaned it several times in that period. But it still is working great.

i was under the impression to never use water of any kind to clean a firearm. i know the marines used to submerge their weapons in drycleaning solvent before inspection or when the weapons first arrive. they had to oil them tho, as the drycleaning agent would take all the oil out of the metal and finish.
