I store my XDM in the stock case, and have from day 1. I've never encountered rust issues, and as some of you know Virginia summers get pretty wickedly humid. For peace of mind I took one of those little silica gel desiccant packs from a shoebox and put it in the case with the pistol. It seems to do the trick.

I agree totally, CLP stays on every one of my guns.

I have stored everyone of my guns in their original cases for 15 years now.

I have never had an issue of rust on anything blued or stainless.

Why is everyone recommending steel wool? Sure it'll work, but can also leave tiny bits of itself behind, which themselves can rust later on. This is typically where it comes from anyway in new guns, "bits" of the milling bits embedded in the stainless.

I use CLP and VPI paper from work when storing in foam. Never had a problem.

Hoppes #9....I use it all the time, wipe it down with the stuff when you get done cleaning. A lot of people have the "misconception" that "stainless" will not rust....guess you found out it will. Also, save the little moisture packets that come in so many things you buy and put a few in the case.

Red rust like that is usually from contamination, as RustyNuts says. If you use tooling on carbon steel, then use the same tooling on stainless steel, small particles are transferred to the stainless. The tooling itself can leave small particles behind too. The particles then rust, causing the specks you see.

You could have SA fix it, or you can steel wool it off. Once you steel wool the particles off, they will not return, because they are only on the surface of the steel.
