Best to not let it touch the foam. Wrap it in the silicone cloth or get a gunsock.

Why is it that guns are shipped in the factory box and some sit for a few years in said box at a warehouse before being sold and don't rust?

Most are either greased up, in bags, or wrapped in treated paper. Plus they're not opened and closed a lot letting moisture in, plus they're not constantly handled and put away without wiping down.

Under your bed in the factory box is hardly the place to be storing a gun anyway. You should get yourself a safe or lockbox (I like the quick release safe, within reaching distance of the bed) and store the gun in there with a dehumidifier.

Also, be sure to rub a layer of oil over the gun before you put it away.

Ooops!

After all the huge money that SA spent on R&D, tooling, production, marketing, etc, it would appear that SA may have skimped on the grade of stainless steel (SS) to use for their XDm and/or not selected a better corrosion inhibitive treatment for the slide’s metal. Stainless may stain "less", but your gun's slide should not have rusted that easily either! When I say “easily”, I mean it took a pretty short period of time just to get light surface rusting.

I purchased a SS Taurus PT1911 a couple of months ago. I shot that gun out in the high humidity and heavy rains (I live in N Florida), handled it a LOT at home during dry fire and practice draws from holster, didn't clean it, didn't oil it, didn't use any rust inhibiters, left it in its original packaging/foam lined case for a few weeks as the gun’s storage…yet not a single spot of rust formed on that gun whatsoever. I’ve had other SS guns in the past that have never rusted as easily as yours had. Similarly, I have a black melonite XD 45 that is bone dry and hasn’t rusted either.

I'm not a metallurgist, but SS that "easily" rusts implies to me higher carbon content in the metal. This is actually good for durability, but as you have experienced, rust is more likely to happen too. SS is also generally more prone to impact damage (“peening”) and binding (due to “gauling”) compared to carbon steel. Fortunately, companies such as Smith & Wesson have figured out how to make SS guns that are durable, slick, and highly corrosion resistant. Hmmm…I wonder how well the SA SS 1911s hold up in the corrosion resistant department…anyone? If good, then someone on the XD design team may have made a poor decision for the SS XDs.

I guess I won’t be buying an XDm in SS, opting for the black melonite finished gun instead. For me, the SS finish would have been far more for corrosion resistance than aesthetics. For those who want the best of both worlds (a bright finish as well as a more durable carbon steel slide) recommend you buy the black XDm then have the slide treated with something like Robar NP3. Might as well treat all other metal parts in the gun too (and/or change the stock bbl with a SS aftermarket one). Kind of silly for SA to provide a SS slide but leave many of the other parts carbon steel.

+1 for Flitz. Works like magic on the XD's SS slide. Regarding the Springfield SS 1911 - I just bought one so I'll let you know if the holdup of the SS on it is different from the XD.

I guess it's annoying (the XD SS issue), but I don't mind rubbing it down. More bonding time with the gun!
