How do I get the rust off?

I shoot my ss/od XDM9 in USPSA matches twice a month. For once I neglected to clean it between matches and when I took it out of the case the night before the match I noticed a few spots of rust on the slide. Any suggestions on the best way to get the rust off.

CLP and a non-metal brush (toothbrush).

Your mistake was storing a firearm in a case. Never store a firearm in a closed case. You trap moisture and it will rust. If you don't have a vault with a golden rod or equivalent and must use a case. Purchase a desiccant pack to absorb moisture. Place it as far away from the firearm as you can in the case and change it or rejuvenate it on a consistent schedule. I can't count the number of times someone has walked in with a case and opened it to expose a ruined firearm covered with rust. The above is a good start to remove.

CLP a soft cloth and elbow grease. Then store the slide in a cloth moistened with CLP overnight. Wipe off the excess the next day and it should be fine. It worked for me on an old revolver I had.

I know a lot of folks use fine steel wool and oil. That will work, but steel wool and stainless do not go well together. The steel wool (or any contact woith carbon steel) and stainless is not good.

Best way to remove "rust" that I have found is an old white sock (that one that all of the lint has washed out of) and Remoil and a lot of elbow grease. You could try a bit of Flitz ... but just a little dab'll do 'ya.

Storage in one of these new silicon "gun-socks" is a good way to avoid probs. (There again the ubiquitous white sock turned inside out works too.)

so if not a closed case (and a safe is not an option) what should it be stored in?

even in a drawer would be better than the case. just remember always wipe it down after you touch it. you could keep it in a rag thats has silicon on it or remoil and just wrap the gun and put it away.
