Microscopic rust specs.
Hello all,
I just bought my new XD45C Bi-tone, as some of you know, but I noticed today some super-tiny microscopic rust specs on the slide... I had taken it out of the factory case and bought a little gun safe for it, since some folks said the case causes rust, I put it in a little gun safe. I wiped it down, thin sheen of oil on it when I put it up. Well, sure enough, yesterday I bought a "desiccant" can for my safe, and today I went to put it in... That's when I noticed the little tiny flecks of rust. What can I use on it to make them go away? I would rather not have to send the slide back to SA, since the spots are very small, but they're kinda everywhere, but I don't want them to get worse! I didn't have my camera or I would have taken a couple shots. My phone won't show the spots (that's how small they are). I noticed in another post about rust they had a "fingerprint" pattern rust spot. Mine is almost round shaped in one spot, almost like a finger print. What would cause this? Just oil from my hands left on it over a few days? Anyway, what I need help with is how to fix them. I got one of those silicone rod and gun cloths from Hoppes, but I didn't have all day so I wiped it down really well... I wasn't sure if the spots were going away or not. Seemed like they were, but it might have been wishful thinking. I really like the look of the bitone, and I won't be in NC forever, so maybe it'll be okay once I get somewhere less WET, but in the meantime, what to do? I've heard talk of all kinds of different coatings, do they change the color? are they expensive? Anything I should know about? Thanks again for all the help! -Adam |

I use a Dri-Rod in my gun safe. It is a rod that plugs in and heats up to dry the air in the safe. Not sure how well it will work in a pistol safe. You need a hole to slide the plug through. I have lots of weapons in my safe with no rust after several years. I got mine at a local sporting goods store.

I take good care of my guns but i have handled my XD stainless with my hands and not wiped it down before for a couple weeks ad no rust. I feel like the steel quality differs from batch to batch of the XDS.

The funny thing was he had a Wilson and ED Brown 1911 that were regular steel but had a polymer painted finish. Neither one of them rusted, even in the places where the finish was worn to bare metal. Maybe hard chrome is what you need. |
