new gun rusting away

2 weeks ago i traded a guy my Smith&Wesson 915 for a XD-9 sub-compact and it was great and not rusting or anything at all ,,,i actually wanted to just sell it but it was a good deal to just trade ,my 10 yr old S&W for his 1 yr old S.A. 9mm XD.. . Took it all aprt and everythinhg was fine .I go and shoot it and it was all striaight and great shooting ! So i put it in my car for 2 weeks and then get it back out and its got spots of rust all over the damn thing! It was just great before this and now there is rust everywhere! I got most of it off with some real fine steel wool , but WTF! If Springfiled-Armory is so bent on takiing on Croatia's HS and putting their name on it then why dont they put a better finish on it? Springfiled has a great name and i have always bought products from them but this XD is CRAP! 2WEEKS and i get rust! Yeah , it had been raining here , but it should not have been rusting it a car that was dry ! No offense but all my Glocks Have never had rust ! I have read the rust post's about the XD's and wonder why S.A. never wanted to do a better rust thing. I knew they potentially could rust but not this fast.

Most people have never had a problem with rust.

Glocks have a better finish on them than the XD. I don't care what gun it is but I always leave a coat of CLP or a rust preventative on the slide. I also make sure to wipe it down before putting it away. Even though your car is dry you have to consider humidity.
Sorry to hear about your rust problem. You aren't the only one...

Leaving a gun in a car for 2 weeks while it rains is asking for trouble. The car is not airtight and not conditioned like your home is 24 hours a day. Yes they could do a better finish but you should do a better job taking care of your gun too. Ive shot mine outdoors inthe rain all day long and never had rust because i took the time to wipe it down and clean it up. Out of my 3 XD's, none have rusted.

Take care of what's left and keep it oiled down from now on with a good oil or otherwise sell it. Someone will surely take it off your hands. Problem solved.
If you want to keep it and not worry about it, spend $45 and get it Duracoated.

Even on a good day a car is like a giant humidor. Leaving any gun in a car for an extended period of time is asking for trouble.

That is why trunk/truck guns are usually cheap and somewhat dispensable.

I call owner mishandling on this one.

And yes some peoples Xd's are prone to rust, but when you don't take care of it like any other blued gun, what do you expect?

Tercel 89,

You can do a search on this topic and get a great deal of information. I recommend Boeshield T-9 which is an aerosol spray. It is used as a rust preventative for Boeing jets and cast iron tools. It is very effective on XDs as well. It is far superior to a light coating of gun oil.

What's the best, most economical outlet/distributor for the Boeshield T-9?

Thanks
