Hard chrome would indeed look nice on "my baby".
I hate to sell it (because it shoots so well, and I don't want to give the problem to a new owner), so hard chroming may be the only option. Living in Canada, sending the slide to Springfield for refinishing isn't an option. We have some excellent 'smiths here who do hard chroming, so that's probably what I'll do.

i haven't had rust on my xd40 yet.. but on the rust topic I hadn't shot my remington 11-87 in quite a while.. took it out of the case the other day to clean it.. couldn't see it on the gun, but the rag I used to clean was covered in rust. Was completely my fault. Just purchased some stuff from inhibitor tonight, the plug that goes in the barrel and the oil for coating the outside of the gun. For my pistol safe I used one of the barrel plugs for a 12 ga that you can stick to the side of your safe. Hopefully won't ever run into the rust issue with my gun now, and hope my 11-87 can quit rusting!

I am new here and new to the XD owner world (11/05). I previously owned a G23C that I carried as a duty weapon for numerous years and fired quite frequently. I realize what I am about to say is going to drive some of the hardcore clean your weapon after every round folks crazy. I would fire my G23 through a session and reload with duty ammo, reholster, and carry it for months without cleaning, without so much as a shread of doubt about rust, or it going BANG, when necessary. After a few months when I did clean it, I NEVER saw any rust. Don't get me wrong I love my new XD and shoot better with it than I did my Glock, but the finish sucks. My new XD hasn't shown any rust, but is showing signs of uneven finish wear which concerns me.

I guess my point is this, if Glock can put a coating on it's weapons that prevent rust even during extreme conditions so could Springfield. The finish on mine is wearing pretty bad in a couple of spots.

Any recommendations on a coating that will hold up like the Glock's?
