Removing slight rust etching.

Can anyone recommend a product that will restore the slide coloring while removing any rust particles that may remain on my pistol, or will I have to have it reblued professionally?

Any good gun cleaner (CLP) will remove slight surface rust. But will not remove pitting in the finish. Are you sure its rust, and not just some brass scratches from either casings or rivets on your jeans?

As you can see in this picture, the damage goes beneath the surface. Any suggestions?

Refinish the gun yourself or have it done. If you know omeone that does sand blasting, you can erase all signs of the rust and then finish it with a good product.

Its easy to apply and extremely durable. I just refinished 2 1911's for Tomfoolery last night. Hopefully he will get pics up soon.

A question about sand blasting: I hear aluminum oxide, 120 grit, is the best for metal prep for most spray-on finishes. What, if any, steps must be taken to prevent mangling the roll marks on the slide when blasting?

120 AO is a good grit to use. It wont mangle the roll marks, your safe there.

Check out NIC industries Cerakote Products for the best coatings on the market.

Thanks. I ended up using KG Gunkote (via Brownells). Turned out very well.
