Things covered in earlier posts about rust problems suggest that the rust problems with XD's may be due to the coating covering the metal (bluing). It may be that the coating it's self causes rust to accrue (a chemical reaction within the bluing process). I had a minor rust problem myself and the rust was not on the metal, it was in the coating. A good hard chrome or black chrome process should cure any rust problems. I doubt putting a good coating on your gun would cause SA to void your warranty.
