I keep my non carry/home protection guns in a safe with a goldenrod so rust protection isn't a problem. But for long term storage without a safe Humorris is right on with a silicone rag or gun sock. Typically these are thin enough that the piece will still fit in the factory case.

just got off the phone with SA, and the fella there told me that storing it in their case can start the rusting as the material inside traps the moisture.

I kept my first XD in it's original foam lined case, and it starting getting rust on the top of the slide about and inch back from the front sight. I never got the pistol wet before this started happening. So it is true. I keep my pistols in soft zipper cases now.
