An assault weapon has a detachable magazine, in conjunction with one, two, or more other features such as a pistol grip, a folding stock, a flash suppressor, or a bayonet lug.
notice it says features...not capabilities...so the definition is gleaned from "assault rifle" but applied to semi-auto only firearms giving them the "look" of their more deadly purposefully built and job specific weapons of war...
It has always been based upon fear driven by ignorance and political expedience rather than protection...
Ultimately it boils down to CONTROL...
