Should training be manditory for gun ownership?

This question comes up occasionally.
Do we do the pro-gun community a disservice and hurt our cause, when we allow people to purchase guns without some type of formal training in it's safety and use.
When a person buys a gun for defense let's say, and puts it loaded in a drawer, does that person invite an accident or worse? And doesn't this reflect on all of the responsible gun owners?
Your thoughts.

The Swiss probably have the right idea in this regard.

Sorry about the typo in the poll question. It should read..."Should training be manditory for gun ownership?"...DUH!

While I would never vote for a bill that requires manditory training, I did vote yes for this. In a perfect world people would seek out the necessary training and it would be a non issue. We know thats not always the case. With a perfect government we would be confident that they could implement legislation requiring gun safety (especially when carrying is concerned) classes without worrying about them further infringing on out rights. We also know that this is not the case.

So while I think all gun owners should be trained, and it should be required like passing a drive test to obtain a drivers license, I would never support such legislation because it places more power into the hands of an already oppressive government.

I do agree with you when it comes to gun safety. The only problem is that people need to know more than just gun safety. They need to know the legalities of using lethal force. I spent 6 years on active duty and I never learned this since the rules of engagement are quite different in a military setting. Concealed carry classes are important and everyone should take one reglardless of whether it is required or not.

You make very good points. I would be opposed to a federal mandate, leaving it to the states. I believe that it would be wise for state gun organizations to spearhead such a move, and be heavily involved in it's wording and implementation.

I agree with you, Frenchy. (And I am not just saying that because I am an instructor. I am saying because of the REALLY stupid things I have seen new shooters do.)

I would hope that everyone would leave their reasoning for their vote.

"View Poll Results: Should gun ownership be manditory for gun ownership?"

Yes!

Seriously though... should gun owners seek out proper training? Yes. Should the government legislate it? Nope. Every law has unintended consequences no matter how good the stated goal seems.

i agree that for conceal carry you need a class.. but this is just for regulate ownership and to get a generalization on how to use a weapon and cleaning.. military can provide that.. and also whip this "fat" America back into shape!
