If you plan to CC it I would get the 340. It is much lighter than(probably half as heavy as) the XD9SC. If you want just a fun range gun then get the XD9. The S&W 340 isn't all that fun to shoot and honestly it hurts a bit. However, it is very comfortable and easy to carry.

Here is a teaser for you

Keep Guns / Get Rid of Wife

Only kidding there. I have the 642 and live in SC so for most of the warm weather I pocket carry. My XD compact, G19 & M&P is my CC in the cooler months or if I wear a golf shirt instead of just a T.

I carry my 340 more often than my XD sub.

Make sure you are aware of what you are getting though. The 340 is a handfull to shoot.
I traded a 649 for the 340, I do not regret the decision because the 340 is so much easier to carry, but the 649 was easier to shoot.

I love the xd's but if you've had you sights set on the 340 go for it yeah they are a beast to shoot though keep that in mind or else it cld end up being that gun you wanted forever, got then hate and are stuck with. on the xd side it is an awsome gun and recoil is very manageable so you wldnt be loosing there if you got one ,both are very concealable

WARNING!!!! the 340 with full magnum loads freaking hurts to shoot personal experience talking here. It bruised the palm of my hand and I only shot 3 of the 5 rounds. I have a 329PD I can shoot 24 rounds of magnum loads out of it before it starts to hurt a little. The 340 in my opinion kicks like a damn mule.

Yes, it does hurt, but in a self defense situation, would you be afraid of bruising your palm for a day or two?

not a fair poll: Comparing apples to oranges. A super light revolver w/ 5 rounds against a relatively heavy 9mm with 11 rounds (13 if you fix the magazines properly).

No I wouldn't be afraid of bruising but you do have to practice with the gun and doesn't seem practical to buy a gun that after 3 rounds bruises your
hand. I know you can practice with .38 special but it seems to me you would or should practice with magnum loads to become familiar with it. Just my opinion though and you not what they say about opinions.
