I change it up all the time.

From 3 yards to 7 yards often. Then any thing from 10 to 50+ yards.

As for me, I CONSISTENTLY practice from different distances from in my face (two feet) out to 75 feet I don't practice beyond those distance simply because the data doesn’t support doing it and the fact my time is better spent practicing from distance I'll actually need to defend myself from.

MORE IMPORTANT THAN DISTANCE is the QUALITY OF YOUR PRACTICE. Like practicing Retracted Ready, Ready Position. Low Search & Ready, and MOST IMPORTANT...Draw from Holster.

My typical training regiment covers;
- Emergency Reload: Slide locked back empty mag simulation
- Failure to Fire, Class I: Exercise simulates you’ve press the trigger but no BANG.
- Failure to Eject, Class II: Exercise simulates round didn’t eject clear slide after firing and is now lodged between slide and barrel i.e. “stove pipe”
- Failure to Extract, Class III: Exercise simulates you’ve press the trigger round fired but casing never ejected and IS STILL IN THE BARREL!
- Speed Exercise: goal is to fire one (ACCURATE) shot in less than 0.5 of a sec. from holster.
- Up Close Firing Exercise (this is a shoot and MOVE exercise!)
- Draw from Holster [with outer garment - jacket unzipped).
- Another Shooting on the Move Exercise
- UP CLOSE From Holster Stationary [with outer garment] <ç this one is fun once you get use to doing it.!!!!!
- Middle of the Night exercise: you wake up to breaking glass
- Mag Change Discipline: ANY TIME you shoot defensively after threat is down need to practice FAST RELOAD WITH A REFRESH MAG.
- TRIGGER SEAR RESET PRACTICE
- I also practice… “Post Shooting Communication Plan”

So like I said, distance really isn’t the issue rather the QUALITY OF YOUR PRACTICE.

Interesting that you practice both Type I and Type II considering they require the same action.

I am not sure what "data" you are using but when some match distances can go up to 75 yards(2007 Area 3 championships).

And .5sec first shot hit is better than some Grand Master USPSA shooters. I think Max Michele Jr.'s best time in the 3GM video from Saul Kirsch was .64sec. You should be doing something other than practice with skill like that.

Wish I was that fast clearly a typo on my part.... s/b <1.5secs Next time I'll pay closer attention when I proof read my post.

As for practicing both Type I and Type II failures although they require the same action the "mind" reacts differently so I practice both situations so if I encounter say a "Stove Pipe" I can handle it calmy because I've practiced it...same goes for click no bang.

PLEASE REPLY WITH:
1) Gun used (and barrel length)
2) Caliber
3) Distance
4) Average group size

I am looking for slow fire tight groups, not self-defense exercises.

I would like to compare mine to what would be considered average or better than average.

This is not a "man size" competition. Please don't lie. You gain nothing but upset the numbers.
Last week I went to the range and shot my new 10/22 and my XD-45 on the 25/50 yard range. The XD results were:

XD-45 Compact 4"
.45 ACP Ammo-Magtech 230 gr FMJ, Federal HST 230 gr, Federal EFMJ 200 gr.
75 feet-8" avg.

Update - from 07.27.2008

I got some much-needed training on Sunday (the basics!). Better grip, stance, breathing, both eyes open (I'm right handed but left eye dominant), trigger pull, etc.... I went from a scattered target w/ fliers (like I've been shooting over the past three years) from my XD-9 service model to this:

6-shot group
Distance: 7 yards
group height 3.25"
group width 1.5"
group distance from center 1.5"

Now THAT'S more like it!!! Target (paper) size is actually Letter (8.5" x 11").

And here's my pride and joy!!... Since we're talking about times.... I did a timed holster-draw drill! Now, other than "practicing" and adjusting my SERPA holster when I first got it, I have never really practiced drawing my weapon from it under "stress." Granted, this was only the stress of time (not a life and death situation), but it freaked me out anyway, since I have NEVER had my shooting timed before!

5-shot group ("Shooter ready... stand by..." beep, draw, 1 shot, reholster, repeat)
Distance: 5 yards
group height 11"
group width 5.25"
group distance from center 2"??
1st shot: 1.80 seconds, low center
2nd shot: 1.68 seconds, low left
3rd shot: 1.81 seconds, low left
4th shot: 1.62 seconds, very high center (off the paper by 1/2")
5th shot: 1.58 seconds, left (off the paper by 1/4")

Now, my trainer's comments about my timed exercise made me VERY HAPPY. He said that for someone never doing this (draw from holster and timed) before, I did "EXCELLENT!" He said that with some practice, he believes I could get my times down to about a second!! I'm so stoked about that!!! But for right now, if I take my time on every draw-and-shot, I could do very well if I take about 1.75 seconds for each shot. Especially since my faster draws ended up off the paper a little....

I can't vote twice but

7 yrds XD9sc 2-4in groups 147gr WWB JHP, avg draw to first shot IWB 1.8-2.1sec, 9 shots, drop of mag and reload 10-12secs. I practice with 10rds, 9 in the mag one in the pipe, this way I know i can reload w/o having to re chamber

3-4yrds Keltec P32 2-3in groups two handed, 4-6in groups single handed 71gr Remington Ball and 65gr Win Silvertips, never measured time, element of surprise is key to this bugger!

Ideally you want to be good ina distance your are most likely going to defend yourself. 7yrds takes into account you are back pedaling away from the threat (if room allows) so it makes its realistic.

1.XD Service
2. 45
3. I'll usually shoot probably 4 or 5 (13 round) mags at 7 yards then do the majority of my shooting (a hundred rounds?) at 10 yards, then do a little at 15-25 yards.

4. At 7 yards after I'm warmed up (a mag or two) I'll usually put all the rounds into a 2.5-3 inch ragged hole. At 10 yards it's usually 3.5-4 inch group. Some days are a little better, some days are worse, but that's probably about what I average.
