Personally I would go with an HK or HK clone. Why? Price of magazines. $3 is really hard to pass up when you consider that 7.62X51 AR platform mags are going for about 10X that.

DSA FAL or a PTR Series rifle both are nearly indestructable and more than accurate enough for social work. Plus as stated Mags are plentiful and cheap.

For me it is a tie between the FAL and AR-10.
I had a PTR-91 (HK G3 clone), and currently still own a M1A, FAL, and a couple of AR-10's. For a SHTF weapon, nothing beats the FAL, cleaning and spare kit is really optional. The kick on the FAL is nice and controlled, feels like butter. For modularity, accuracy, and ergonomics, the AR-10 easily wins. M1A would be my last choice. It is hard to scope and even if you can scope it, cheekweld becomes an issue. It is a great shooter if you plan to shoot irons only. G3 is rugged but feels unbalanced, and that kick is a bruiser. This would be the gun for you if your name is Jethro or Jed. |

Well, I thank you guys for all the great input!! At this point I am leaning toward a good AR-10. I have looked at the Browning BAR and WOW-SWEET! nice price but my EBR side says "Don't do it... not evil enough". I am looking for something to use for hunting.. the M1A to me feels quite heavy to be packing 100-200 yrds or whatever going up and down rough terrain and through creeks. I want a gun that if I drop it or bang it on a tree.. it will still look good. I really like the ergonomics of the AR platform as well as the "unlimited" mods one can do to upgrade the looks and performance. To me it seems the most versatile for hunting as well as for SHTF.. but then again I have my Saiga-12 for SHTF and/or Zombie attacks.
Thanks again for all the suggestions AND your reasoning for the suggestions!!

The AR-10 16 inch rocks
It is a little heavy but you have to weight it to tell. It handles like a 16 223 light weight AR-15,
Thanks,Keith

M1A.
Great accuracy and a well built rifle that will last for years. Not to mention it has great historical significance as it was the shortest serving general issue rifle in US history, but is still being issued in limited quantities as a designated marksman rifle.
