Have our public schools gone to hell?

In light of a few articles posted on this board today, it is more then ever save to ponder the state of America's public schools.

They aren't any better or worse than they used to be, just bad in a different way.

You will never get the perfect combination of people who care about educating and people who care about BEING educated in a public school. There are great teachers, great administrators, and great parents in every public system, but not enough of them to counter the tide of people who just don't care, or have a different agenda.

I think they are worse.
This whole zero tolerance thing has made it worse.

Schools all over the country switching from red ink to lavender to grade papers because red is to abrasive and hurts the precious little snowflakes feelings...

Now schools are doing away with "0" if you come to class and don't do any work at all the lowest grade you can get is a 50.

Drawing of a gun... expelled.

Political correctness and the precious snowflake syndrome has got to stop.
We are growing a bunch of sissies who have no idea how to take care of themselves as they get older.

I agree that PC nonsense is a huge, monstrous problem. The other half of that, though, is the rise in individual education programs and other "special needs" advances that lets kids with personality or other problems, and especially learning disorders, get a quality education. Before, in "the good old days" they would have been lumped into the handicapped class and not given much of a chance to succeed.

So you picks your poison. Two steps forward, two steps back.

IMHO, public schools leave our kids woefully unprepared for the rigors of life.

Still, I will not homeschool my kids (when I have them) for one very important reason...

The single greatest thing that I learned in school was not the quadratic equation, Ohm's law or how to diagram a sentence. Rather, it was how to deal with stupid people. Public school is a place where our kids are forced to deal with the ignorant, the abusive, the dumb, the sycophantic and the self-righteous and I cannot provide that breadth of experience through home schooling. Sure, I can instruct and teach and advise... but there's nothing that compares with "baptism by fire" to teach principles and social skills.

Still, I will definitely augment my child's education with exposure to greater math, verbal and musical skills than they could get through the public education system.

.. but this is coming from someone who is not a parent. So what do I know. I'm sure it'll all change when I have kids. From what I've seen and read, everything does.

I would be in big trouble if I was in highschool today. I drew pictures of guns, carried a Buck 110, had a can of Kodiak in my back pocket and would read gun magazines during study hall. I was a "B" student and never really got into trouble. The shop teacher would occasionally "bum a pinch" off of me and a couple of teaches had used my knife to open boxes. I graduated in 96 though, before Columbine.

I am a teacher and do not feel they have gone to hell yet, but they are on their way. My instructional time is limited with all the isht I have to keep up with and do. Making sure johnny gets to the nurse to take his medicine, keep pam from breaking down from the physical abuse at home, being the students mentor, someone they can talk to yada yada yada. Not including all the ese, esol, 501, IEP, service plans for what seems like every student. Parents dont want to take the blame for how they are raising their kids which is reflected in the classroom. Students dont want to take responsibility of their own actions. To me I see the problem as being forced upon by the parents. Parents who are not involved with their children and then come up with all these "plans" for why their children do poorly in school. Then the parents want lower school taxes which means their student is now in a classroom with 40 other students and cant understand why their child is not getting any one on one attention. A lot of the childs performance can be corrected at home simply by holding the child accountable for their actions and performance. However a lot of parents will not take the time at home to hold their child accountable.

i would also have been a 'problem' - i too drew pictures of guns and brought in the occasional American Rifleman magazine to show off to my friends. If i was in school today, the would probably have me in therapy all the time.
