If you plan on seeing some dirt, the 400 would be the easiest to ride. Probably want to get the regular model too, not the SM.

I said other cause I'd get a Harley Road King. I ride a Honda Shadow because I bought it before a friend let me ride his Road King. Man that is a smooth ride and I like cruisers.

Okay, so I went and sat on a KLR today and found something interesting. It was not built for someone with...and I kidd you knot...a 28 inch inseam . Are there ways of lowering them? I think the DR-Z400SM may be a little shorter and more suited for my needs. I am a beginner, and yes, I know I will drop, dump, scrape, and mangle this bike so no, I do not plan on getting a new one. Hopefully I can find one for cheap around here. I plan on riding on back roads and parking lots for a few weeks to build confidence before I take on Nashville traffic. Gonna go look tomorrow morning to see if I can find one. Any other pointers or suggestions? I looked at KTM but are they readily available used?

Please take the MSF course before you get out on the roads. You will learn a lot of stuff that would take years to figure out.... if you ever did.

How far is your road commute???

Most of the dual purpose bikes are going to be tall, even the older ones. Get something street and save up some change for a trail bike.

My commute to and from work is maybe 8 miles round trip... I plan on taking a beginners course offered by one of the local dealers here. Trust me. I am no young guy who wants to tear up the streets. I work plenty of accident scenes in my line of work to know that I need a little schoolin before I go riding along.

Spot on advice here. Get training and the more dirt worthy the taller it's going to be.

Now if you really want a mellow starter bike, take a peak at the Honda 230. It's much lower than the KLR or DRZ. Plus it's a fun little off roader. If you don't need to run it over 55 it might work for you. Overview

And yes, they do make lowering links for the DRZ. I assume you can get one for the KLR.

That scrambler einheit posted looks like fun too.

Anyone ever dealt with United Motors? They have nice looking bike for great prices and I think they might be just what I am looking for. The dirt capability isn't a must. If I have to buy a strictly street bike for now I will. Hoiw about these....this is the UM V2S 250...seat height is only 30 inches! woohoo!! (for us short folk!) It also seems more than capable of doing the running I need to do but it is also not too much bike for a beginner like me. What do you guys think?
