I just hope this is never an issue. People have been saying this since the AWB, hasn't happened yet and I hope it never does. They do keep pushing gun control though and as I see it this is the only goal they could possible have. If they really wanted to prevent crime they would fight crime and not worry about how long my shotgun barrel is or if my .45 holds more than 10 rounds. If the government successfully stole everyone's firearms, you would really need a firearm.

Someone would've broken into my house and stolen all of my guns just before they showed up...
Seriously, if I ever truly feel that the government will soon be taken my guns away, they'll be reported stolen in a heartbeat.
