I'm no chemist, but geezus. I can expect a few of them little rusty specs after being in a humid area, but wow.....
The finish is a product of a controlled chemical reaction. The rust "bloom" on some of these guns reminds me of the old "slow rust" process of bluing. I think some of the guns with the rust problem were shipped out with traces of the finishing chemicals still on them & when they're exposed to humidity the chemical process begins again. The fact that there is still a finish on the slide after the rust is wiped off tends to make my point. The slides need to be scrubbed with a water based solvent like Simple Green or even MPro7 to get rid of the residue, dried thoroughly and wiped down with the product of your choice. I bet if you do that the "problem" will go away.

If there is rust, it is only on the upper. The machine
still functions.

As noted by the picture above from one who went to the
range, came home, left his machine in a bag for several
hours to come back and find what appears to be rust.

Two things here - 1). It performed for him or he would
not still own it, 2). He should have cleaned and oiled the
machine as soon as he got home, not wait around for
several hours to do so.

In a perfect world, maybe. In this world, other things intrude on the ideal.

The first time I saw rust on the XD, I was a bit worried, but it's happened so many times it is nothing to worry about. I knew it would rust after I shot it on a hot, humid day, and I still didn't bother.

In fact, it's been nearly a week and that XD still has rust on it. Of course, there were other blued guns in that bag right next to the XD and they never showed a speck of rust.

I refuse to be anal retentive about wiping down the XD simply because Springfield / HSP decided to skimp on the finish.

Ken is absolutely right. These are marketed as "X-treme Duty" pistols, after all.

I voted no because the only time I've had rust is because I made it rust.

I wrote about it here: http://www.hs2000talk.com/viewtopic....r=asc&start=15

I had one spot of rust on my HS2K, Gen 1 when I went to pick it up after my waiting period. They offered to refinish it at no charge after a few months, but I never needed it again. That was nearly four years ago.
Take care of the pistol and it should not be a problem.

WOW, looks like 50% have had issues. Im glad mine are doing ok, I have a friend that had problems but he did not wipe his gun down on a regular basis. Im sure they have some finish issues but I too agree, you have to take care of your gun.

50% with issues????? How so. 2/3 of the poll answers say they have never had a rust issue.

I believe he mistook the count for a percentage.
