I really like the point of how you can get things refinished at a marginal cost, and still be saving money over buying something more expensive, and possibly not being the gun you'd really like to have.
Then you'll be able to get it in various colors as well....thus bein able to have a more "custom" piece in your collection. I must admit yet again, I've never had rust on any part of my XDs....but sent my fairly new slide off to Tripp anyway. I did it to change the color a bit....and to be rest assured it had a good coating. Now I have the habit of showing off my "custom" XD to people....usually policemen. It's kinda cool pullin my XD out of it's hiding place and do the clearing of the gun....and then showin off the "custom" aspects of it. "Check this out....a stainless guide rod and heavy duty recoil spring....custom grips...magazine bumber pads...custom sights(even though it's just cheap paint)...and even this custom finish." The whole time makin it look like I have the coolest pistol around! hehe Hey they'll never know that the XD was bad to the bone to begin with...but the little silly extras makes it fun.

I set aside my XD9 after competing and the next day or so when I checked it was rusting. I applied oil on the slide and wipe it out. If I don't have the time to clean it I make sure that I apply oil to it after every competition.

I shot a pistol match last Sunday and after leaving my range bag in my garage for a couple hours, I brought it in and pulled out the ol' XD. By now I'm not surprised at what I saw.
![]() ![]() It really is amazing how quick this thing rusts. It's also amazing how it always cleans up afterward, no worse for wear. |

OMG. That last pic just make me sick to my stomach.
There's gotta be something wrong in the way the steel cured or whatever the word is. I'm no chemist, but geezus. I can expect a few of them little rusty specs after being in a humid area, but wow.....

Mark me down as another "YES I've got rust" vote.
ALL my guns live together(I'm hoping they'll breed All get the same TLC. Only my XD (Which I still like quite a bit) consistantly has a dusting of red

Altho alot of factors play in a firearm getting rust and or rust spots Ie: storage place, humidity , and how often it is Cleaned and wiped down and with what. However. in my humble opinion 30% as of today 7-20-05 is still way too high for Springfield Armory not to step up to the plate and do the right thing and up hold its quality standerds to there reputation and Standerds that they speak of so highly.Total Quality commitment is not being up held and i know that they have people reading these Posts in this Forum. Dont Hold us accountable for quality issues on the XD finish or The Lack there of.....They need to stand by the four Absolutes of quality as i see it..
1. Quality is defined as conformance to requirements. 2-The System for causing quality is Prevention 3-The quality performance standerd is zero defects 4-The measurement of quality is the price of non-conformance. And once there is a nonconformance or outage these simple seven steps for improvement has never failed. 1-Reason for imrovement: Identify the problem/s and demonstrate need for improvement. 2-Current situation: Gather current data. 3-Cause anaysis: Validate causes with data. 4-Solutions: Develop, try, and implement solution. 5-results: Evaluate solution and implementation plans. Confirm effectiveness of solution. 6-Standerdization: Standerdize work/manufacturing methods to maintain improvements. 7-Future plans: Plan to address other improvement opportunities. These 7 steps to improvement would help. Hope this catches your eyes Springfield Armory.

no rust, but have some finish issues in the sight track and inside the finger grooves. I don't mind holster wear but this is a couple of spots where the holster doesn't rub, so it is a thin application issue(defect) from the factory. It isn't that big or even very noticeable so it isn't something that really bothers me that much, what does is SA obviously knows there is issues and don't seem to be doing anything to stop it aside from giving some free refinishes. Someone else said it earlier, how tough would it be to make a phone call or heck even send an e-mail to croatia and work something out to fix the known issue. Who knows maybe they have ,and decided it is cheaper to refinish some, rather then redo the way things are done now. Imagine how many more guns they would sell if they didn't have the bad finish reputation to deal with.
