There obviously is a finish problem with this gun or there would not be so much talk about it..I looked at 5 other forums for other major makes and I see no where near the amount of talk about this issue than on here. I agree with everyone that says you have to clean and maintain these things..I do myself.. My gun is too new to see if I will be hit with the rust curse but if I am..it is not due to neglect.. SA calls these guns extreme duty...that to me means they should not have to be pampered as they apparantly need to be.. There will always be circumstances where people for whatever reason..good or bad..were not able to maintain their gun as they should but should not be hit with such(major) rust problems. I read people saying if you have rust...its the owners fault...After reading all these threads..I can not agree with that..Sure some people will say they take care of their guns when they really do not etc..but just too many people experiencing the same thing and only with this gun. I have a 20 year old .22 rifle where the last time I shot it was on a misty morning, 20 some years ago..All I did was half heartedly wipe it off and put it away. NO oil or anything..Out of curiosity..I dug this old thing out and not one speck of rust. I expected a rusted piece of junk after reading all this. Sounds as if that were an XD...It would have been.. I hope I am a lucky one with no rust problems..I am not knocking this gun at all...I love it..but there is nothing in this world I would be so emotionaly tied to that I would defend a defect... Nothing is perfect..At least you guys are not as bad as those GLOCK forums..I was going to get a glock..was only $25 than my XD..both new..but those GLOCK forums turned me off of that thing..Being proud is one thing..but obnoxious goes too far..I like my XD and the majority of you guys/gals are a decent group.. Always a few rude people in any forum..but luckily it's not too bad here. Now fire away...I am sure many will disagree and still defend the rust issue to the end

I defend the XD as well despite it's rust issues which should be pampered if you want your firearm to be functional at any time. Don't tease your xd with long periods of uncleanliness just give it the cleaning that it deserves for being the fine criminal busting firearm it has already proven to be and then you can focus on other things like range shooting when you gun isn't so malfunction driven. I have had no rust issues with my xd though the sweaty grips keep irking me and causing frustration, I used to be such a friendly happy shooter until sweat and rust hit the picture.

I have my xd9 sub getting OD slide refinishing because I just ordered one of SA's "custom fitted" fobus-like holsters. I put the pistol in a few times and then noticed the inside of the holster had gouged a groove out of the hard plastic where the slide release is (apparently). But worse, on my slide were some fine scratches which I feel (after three years of babying this gun) the holster caused because the scraped insides were evident. I complained to SA that a holster made by them should not have to be altered By the gun to Fit the gun! Sheesh, I wonder if they will issue a refund for the holster (about one month old) and my shipping costs. I am perfectly happy paying for the refinishing, since the stock finish seems rather fragile by that example. A fine gun otherwise.

Any holster that is tight enough to retain the gun will, over time, wear the finish. Leather doesn't wear it as quickly as Kydex, but it will affect it.

Doggonit. I just got my piece back from SA, and they did not include Heine's sights or the OD Armory Kote (AK) I had requested. I had sent my XD SC 9 in for small scratches caused by their new molded holster. Anyways, I was really looking forward to the new sights. They did refinish my slide in AK but in black for no charge. The gun is unbelievable in that it points exactly to where my finger points with no gun in my hand. A great point, perfect! So I am happy to have it again.

I only inserted it three times when I first opened up the package. That should not cause scratching. In my case it didn't fit, the holster, to the gun. The gun was carving a path and scratching the gun when reinserted. Anyways it didn't fit. The update today is: Doggonit. They did say they would refund my shipping charges too. So I am very satisfied they saved me money

Your XD holster scratched your slide too? Mine as well! Like the first 2 times it ever went in there. I'm sending my gun in to get the locking block replaced next week, and I'm going to say something about it. I don't mind holster wear, or scratches you create but the holster scratched it instantly. Something I don't care to have happen when the gun is new. Besides, if it had caused rub marks on corners that's one thing, but this is down the side of the slide in the middle, several small scratches.

Did you ask them to armory kote it to fix it, or did you just point out that it scratched it and they chose to do so?

I sent it back for the scratches, but asked them to upgrade to the AK finish since it is susceptible to scratching evidently. I requested it as an upgrade and offered to pay for it. While I was at it, I reviewed options with their custom shop people and ordered OD AK, and additional Heine Straight Eights. They did the black AK in repair, for no charge. Not exactly what I asked for, but the XD is back in my hands where it will stay for quite a while. They saved me $90 for the AK, and $95 for the sights, is the way I look at it. All's well that ends well.
