I noticed rust on my slide just the other day. I have had my 40sc for over a year and never had an issue before. there wasn't very much, but more than I would like to see. I haven't contacted SA yet about it, but I will. Thanks.

Thats a big 10-4 on the rust issue.

Heres the link to the topic I started when my XD completely rusted over:

Still haven't gotten it refinished though. Some day I probably will but for now its been doing good.

I just happened to look at all 3 of my XD's and saw rust on my 40 sub. I'm surprised. Oh, well. I guess I have to consider having it, and maybe the others, refinished.

Rust...not yet but missing some finish

I don't have rust yet but I did notice something pretty bothersome. The otherday I took my XD-9 tactical to get fitted for a holster. The gun shop owner slid it into one of the kytex types. Well, when I got back home, I went to go wipe it down and along one of the sides of the slide, right along the ridge (right under the letters XD) is a 1.5" inch long section of bright shiney silver. The finish has rubbed right off! The guy at the shop just slid it into one holster....once. I guess I will be writing SA about this. The gun is only 4 weeks old! Let me know if anyone else is experiencing this!

Yep, I get a bit of rust on the slide, near the finger grooves about every other day. I'm sure it's from carry, and I whipe it down about every other day. I don't find rust every time, but about every other time I'd guess. As soon as I scrape some dough together, I'll be getting it Dura Coated.

Well, I wrote SA and got a reply about the finish

I wrote SA and got a reply about the finish problem I am having already. Basically, the customer service lady told me that she doubts the finish would rub off after one holstering. Regardless, they don't warrantee the gun's finish after holstering or after neglect. Neglect I can understand. But holstering it once? I can swear it was just once because I had to special order the darn thing and it just arrived today and I have yet to pick it up from the shop! Oh well, what ya gonna do? I guess I'll be in line for some type of duracoating also.

QUESTION: What is the difference between SA's "armory coating" and the standard finish and is it worth a darn?

Wouldn't oil take care of all rust problems?

SA's "Armory Coat" is some kind of paint that's cured by baking, and it's very likely Gunkote.

The standard finish is some sort of black oxide treatment, probably about the same speed as the black oxide dips used to treat tools. It isn't traditional gun blue.

Sure it would -- if you can get oil to stay on the surface every second of the day. Unfortunately as we all have seen, if a gun's holstered, handled, shot, or carried, oil will rub away, and then the finish is free to rust where it's been touched.

I personally think the best solution to keep the stock finish from rusting would be some sort of wax treatment like wganz mentioned. This is basically what Armadillo does, but it's hard to apply it thoroughly over the entire metal surface.

No, and I carry my XD IWB with a Clip-Draw universal clip, no holster.
I clean and wipe it down after every shoot and I've never had a problem.
