I had an 870 and got rid of it . It would rust on humid days, had to have the chanber reamed because it wouldn't eject shells, and the safety would not engage. Bought a 500 and it is a workhorse. It shoots all loads well and has a 6 shot capacity compared to 5 in the 870.

Browning BPS. One of the most under-rate pump shotguns on the market. A used one can be had cheap and they are a more robust shotgun than the Remington 870 or the Mosseberg 500. Bottom load bottom eject and a tang mounted safety make them a truly ambidextrous shotgun. The lack of a spring loaded lifter gate makes them easier and much faster to load. The lack of a side ejection port and a solid back to the receiver makes the receive stronger.

I've also got a 590 that's identical to the pic above (only with a standard stock). Overall, I like it. I like the placement of the safety and the action lock because the shooting hand doesn't have to change positions....very convenient. I gets awfully heavy when loaded to capacity though. I was really feeling it towards the end of an 8 hr. shotgun class I took a few weeks ago.

Remington 11-87LE

I still have my old 20 yr old Moss 500 - it works great, but it rattles a lot.

I use my 870 3.5" 12 for hunting

This is what I depend upon: Remington 11-87LE I have a laser max light / laser combo on the end that interferes with the forward sling swivel, but lights up an area for clearing / identifying.

I think this is the one i saw at big5 for like $300 its what got me looking into shotguns in the first place nice. Im stuck between this and the r870 marin magnum XCS. The only problem about the remington is it costs $870 and the mossberg is only $300 but i dont know.

Hey Gimp, did you get my PM about the FN Herstal SLP? For $699 I dont think you can do any better "bang for buck". I predict the price on this shotgun will be over $1,500 withen a years time. (some people are actually selling it for this much right now)

The FN SLP is light (not only in weight but in recoil), reliable, durable and built very tough. The SLP is the fastest semi auto in the world. The barrel accepts choke tubes and the over all finish is top notch quality. The 2 gas pistons that come with the shotgun give you the option to shoot heavy or light loads in a reliable way. I was blown away on how easy it was to field strip this shotgun, I could have it completely taken apart and put back together in 5 minutes. The topper is that the manual is printed in all english..

Dont get me wrong, im an 870 guy and have owned my share of Mossbergs but after buying and shooting the SLP I have nothing but positive input about the SLP. You will find that if you do your research you wont be able to find any negative reviews on this particular shotgun.

Here are some links- FN Self-Loading Shotguns

Do you know for sure if they have the SLP? You may be hard pressed finding a SLP in stock anywhere locally. I know its hard convicing yourself a autoloader is the way to go based on reliability issues but like I said, do your home work and you will see for yourself that this particular shotgun was made to function correctly. Im sorry to say but 1187's do not compare with the SLP reliabilty wise "IMO" Just google it "remington 1187 reliability"

Mossberg 590. Sure you may never use the bayo lug, but its there if you need it.
