i dont like any 5" barrels even on a 1911.
i have a xd40 and xd45 both with 4" barrels
my most resent gun is a 4" kimber pro-carry 1911

its mostly just a cosmetic thing

Depends on whether or not I'm carrying it. I want the 4" for carry, 5" for gun games and range use.

My XD 45 Tactical (5") was bought with range work in mind. For me, it is better balanced and the longer sight radius is welcome. If I was going to carry it, I would have gone with the service model.

My 4" service model was purchased for home defense/self defense carry. If I were shooting for accuracy/range duty, I would choose the 5".

I've have been to many gun shops time and time again where the salesman is selling the customer on a XD45 service and gives no mention at all about the tactical model, leaving the customer no other option but the service model.

I think a lot of XD owners don't find out about the tactical model until after they have made their purchase . This also goes for the bi-tone models, if the gun shop salesman doesn't have it in stock it's not an option for the newbie soon to be gun owner......

Has anyone else noticed this? This is why it is essential to do your homework first before making a firearm purchase at a gun shop.

I bought the 4" service first and then shot the tactical... Love the tactical because of the low recoil. Went out the next day and bought one.

I really like the compact tactical - it is a best of both worlds. Long slide / barrel for accuracy and compact grip for ease of carry. It is the grip size that makes the biggest difference to me in concealment. I carry it in a Milt Sparks Versa Max II Holster so the extra inch of barrel is easily concealed.
