Hemingway never tried hunting hare with a rifle either....man would be easy, he's too dumb.

True, I think he used a shotgun for small game.

More on topic: My favorite critters to hunt are rabbit and squirrel. A group of friends and a few good beagle chasing rabbits out of the thickets is always fun. A nice cool fall day sitting in a stand of hardwoods watching for limb rats is always a relaxing way to spend a day alone in the woods. I also really enjoy whitetail deer hunting all though it is a lot more work than rabbit and squirrel. I also enjoy hot summer days sitting in the shade watching fresh cut fields for groundhogs. Nice way to spend the day relaxed in the shade shooting whistle pigs. The one critter I have not yet hunted but would really like to would be cap buffalo. About the only one of Africa's dangerous five (cap buffalo, elephant, rhino, lion, leopard ) I want to (or could afford to) hunt. I would use a side by side rifle, preferably a Krieghoff big five classic in 470 NE, and stalk them to with in 50 yard before taking the shot. A charge would be all the better! (Yes, I have read to much Capstick.) I do not agree with the idea that you have to eat everything you shoot. There are other reasons to hunt then for food only. I do not eat groundhog but hunt them to limit the damage they do to our farm crops. I shoot coyotes because there are in invasive species here in Ohio and are unbalancing aspect of the environment here. I do eat most of what I hunt but in no way feel obligated to eat all species I hunt. Rambling mcb |

Bird hunting is my favorite. Epecially if someone has a good dog. Hunted a lot of Dove & Quail with my father when we lived in AZ. Try and hunt pheasant in MN but they're pretty much all in SoDak.

I got what you implied, and armed or not-people are dumb. The hunter and the hunted would be doing the same thing-flee or ambush-thats it. Done it quite a few times in the Balkans. A hare on the other hand, is harder to hunt. they don't bed in burrows like rabbits, they don't make the 'orbit' when they are chased, and are a hell of a lot faster than a rabbit. Try it with a rifle and without a dog-its a real challenge!...but to me, dogs are for the lazy man...
