Taking my Concealed Carry Class! Which gun?
I'm all excited, this Saturday, I'm taking my concealed carry class (required in KY). I'm not expecting poor performance, but I'm still nervous. I've read the booklet numerous times, and have been getting 100% on all the questions listed in it.
Then there's qualifying. I've got a lot of guns, but just can't decide which to use to qualify. A great deal being unfired (mint condition) eliminate them. I do equally well with all of those, so deciding is a hard choice. 20 shots are taken on the target, and in this state, 11 hits are required. (Kinda sad, really, that the requirement is that low.) Using either revolver will be far too easy, although it would turn the heads of the other students if I were there using that .44 Magnum. So that gets a bonus point there. Available magazines is also a factor. Although time is given if reloading is needed (not everybody buys extra magazines, for some reason) I would like to just drop my magazine and insert another. Unfortunately, this doesn't help much as to my decision. I have enough magazines for the pistols. As for the two revolvers, I have two speed loaders, and a speed loader holster for each. That would only make me insert two rounds at the end. Of course, ammo prices are also to be factored into this. Though I'm confident that I will hit 20/20 (it's easy) there's nothing wrong with practice to get the feel of the gun again. Going between all these weapons with different grips (particularly Glock to 1911 transitions) is a bit confusing at times. In addition to all that, gun cleaning will be a part of this, so there's the simplicity factor. Out of all those, obviously, the 1911 would be the most complex (in comparison only, not in general). I have holsters for them all, so that wouldn't be a problem, either. I'm leaning towards the Glock 19, since it is what I intend on carrying and using for IDPA. But a Glock is so cliche, and I'm sure at least 2 others at the class will be using a Glock, as well. I know that I'd be watching the shooter at the range using a 1911 or a big-ass .44 Magnum before paying attention to the shooter with the G19. And so, since everybody's wondering how long this post is going to get, I'll just leave the floor open to opinions. Please vote on the poll, and I'll use the winning gun. So I can have a little bit of collective wisdom from you all for luck.

There isn't a limit on how many you can qualify in KY is there? When I did my test here in NV I qualified all of my handguns execpt my .22's. It took me a bit longer than everyone else to take the test but I did all of mine so I can keep my options open. Here in NV the new law is qualify one revolver it qualify's you for all revolvers.

I do not know how it works in your state but here in Texas, if you shoot the course of fire for your CHL (Concealed Handgun License) with an semi-automatic pistol your license will reflect SA (All handguns, whether semi-automatic or not) and you will be allowed to carry both semi-automatic pistols and revolvers. If you shoot the course of fire with a revolver your license will reflect NSA (Only handguns that are not semi-automatic) and that is all you can carry.
As a result, it makes a big difference in what you take the class and shoot the course of fire with. If that is not the case in your state then its not a big deal but I'd take the class with what you intend to carry if it was me. |

I don't know about anything like SA or NSA, but I'll stick to the semi-automatics, just to be safe, I guess.

I've never had to qualify in either state I have a CCW in. Just pass a background check, pay the money, and fog a mirror (yup, I'm still alive). My brother took his Ruger Security Six to the class he had in Michigan though, because his license doesn't specify revolver or pistola. It drew attention, and since the farthest range they shot was about ten yards, he had a single ragged (large) hole in the middle of his target.

I would use the glock just because thats what you plan to carry. Question why would you think the instructor would pay close attention to a 1911?

I dont think it really matters. Just go with what you are most comfortable with shooting.
