Funny thing is in Utah you don't have to do practical anymore for your conceals.

As screwed up as CA is on everything else on laws related to guns, there's no requirement of having to qualify with any gun on your CCW permit here. In fact, there's no requirement to "qualify", period. No test to take either. I took a class, in which, I shot. No test, no qualification. I recieved a certificate of completion. No need to specify whether you shot with a semi or revolver. The only limitation here is that you can only have three firearms on your license (that sucks), and you can only CC with those that you have listed.
Because the shooting involved double-tap practice, I don't think it would have been as much fun with a revolver - though there were revolvers used by individuals in the class I took. My XD fit the bill just fine. Granted, each county may have different rules/requirements. It's extremely lax here though. (Northern CA should have broken off loooong ago... ah, but I digress...) ~ Centerfire |

I shot a 1911 for my ccw in mo. I don't know how they will do it there but in mo we had 5 shots to sight in our semi then 20 more to qualify had to get 15/20 in center mass from 7 yrds. anyways what i was going to say is the 1911 has a different set of procedures on the range during qualification than the guys who were using glocks,xd's,and others. I'd use one of the 9mm to qualify, simple and easy to control recoil for better shot placement. I know I was nervous and a bit shaky during the sighting in I managed to hit 18/20 but It took me a little longer than the other guys becouse I had to calm my nerves a couple times a 9mm would've definately helped but i didn't have one then. Oh and that big ol ruger security six .357 mag yeah that's what I used to qualify for the revolver part of the shooting as in mo we have to shoot both semi and revolvers.

I'm confused: Once you qualify with any of them, can't you carry whatever you want?
Here in AZ you can just use a cheap rental gun (or your own), put 7 out of 10 rounds in a 1 foot box from 15 feet and you're good to go. At least I think thats the distance and target If I remember correctly. One old guy in my class had never even shot a gun before and he did it.

I think in Texas, if you qualify with a revolver, your license actually states that, so its better to qualify with an automatic. I'm not sure of the laws in your states. Other than that, I never did any speed loading of any kind during my qualification, they really didn't want us rapid firing. Just use what you feel the most comfortable with and whatever works reliably.

now that you mention it. when I took my CCW class in Carolina, our instructor told us that one time a man brought his 8 inch barreled S&W .500 to qualify with. Students are required to shoot at 2, 5, and 7 yards. so, as you can imagine, on the 2 yard shot, the end of his barrel was quite close to the target. long story short, not only was the target blown into many tiny pieces, the muzzle flash caught the giant hay bale the target it was attached to on fire. burnt it to the ground.. . . true story.
