I'd go with ensuring the weapon is empty. A gun's entire reason to exist is defined as sending a projectile down the pipe in an accurate, safe, and controlled way. All the other safety rules are oriented around what to do with a loaded weapon, and are secondary IMO, but without ammunition it's just an expensive paperweight and no more dangerous than that--you fundamentally ensure the gun is safe by removing that which makes it unsafe.

I voted keep your finger out of the trigger guard. It is the easiest way to stay safe. If you practice this you are in control of the firearm. If you find yourself in a crowd or other situation where things are moving you must keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. It is the one rule you control, not your environment.

Keep finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. That is the ultimate safety that will help prevent accidental discharge. Just my opinion...

You cannot always have your muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Take for example, you carry your weapon on your hip and you live in an upper apartment, that thing is always going to be aiming down into an occupied apt. But you can keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire................ALWAYS!!!

I didn't vote because I don't think there is one MOST important safety rule. It is a continueous effort to always be aware of your condition physically and mentally, the condition of the gun, the condition of your environment and potential hazards that may exist or be created by your actions or actions beyond your control. Conditions are always changing and you should make yourself aware of these changes and act accordingly. Gun safety starts with discipline, judgement and training. LIVE IT!

If you don't point it at what you don't want to destroy it makes the others a little less dangerous. Not much but a little.
