New Scope
I can't decide on which scope to put on the ar-15 I'm ordering very soon.
It's a Noveske 18" SPR. The problem is that I am still not sure if I want to build it for fast acquisition or precision work. I want this to be SHTF-compatible, but this is such an unlikely event that I would rather build for my primary purpose and that is target shooting. Although I do not currently participate in any matches, now that I will have a semi-auto rifle I may start. It competition impossible with a long-range scope? Everyone here seems to LOVE the ACOG's. What is really so great about them? Eye relief? Quick acquisition? Maybe I am wrong and just need to bite the bullet, but I cannot imagine hitting a 400-yard target with a 4x ACOG. There is really no way for me to see an ACOG either, so PLEASE correct me if I am wrong. I would go with the ACOG if I could be convinced of tight groups from a 4x scope at 200-400 yards. And, what makes the ACOG so much better than any other 4x scope? Pretty much my closest distance would be 7 yards and maximum at 200-400. Here are my choices, in order of where I'm leaning. The problem really is that I hate dumping $2500+ on a rifle and putting a $250 scope on it! But at the same time, these $1200+ scopes are quite expensive, but if I have to I will do it. All of these would be on LaRue Mounts. Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x50mm LR/T M1 Illuminated TMR Reticle Millet TRS-1 4-16x50 Millet DMS-1 1-4x24 ACOG TA31F EOTECH 512 Thanks guys, you all rock here.

Of the ones you listed I have experience with 3 of them. The EO, TA31F, and the Millet DMS-1. The last five pieces of glass I've bought have been ACOGs. 1 TA01NSN, and 2 each of the TA31 A's and F's. The EO is great for speed on target but is range limited unless you add a magnifier. The DMS-1 hasn't really grown on me, but is variable from 1 to 4x. I don't know how much abuse the DMS-1 can handle, but the ACOG will go to hell and back.
The eye relief of the TA31 is only about 1.5", the TA11 iirc is more forgiving at around 3" or so if you don't shoot nose to charging handle.

Abuse will not be a problem as this will be a "show" quality rifle. Also, which do you prefer? The "A" of the "F" version?

![]() after finding this chart, the TA11 eye relief is 2.4" and the 31 is 1.5" chevron "F" ![]() triangle "A" ![]() I haven't given it much thought as which I prefer. The "A" seems to be a bit quicker on target, and the "F" a little better at precisson. There is also the regular TA31 that has the doughnut reticle. Why do I like them ? The glass is clear, NO batteries, the fiber optic adjusts the reticle brightness to conditions, and tritium in low or no light. They are tough as heck, and I think it would darn near impossible to destroy under normal "civilian" conditions. By the way, all of mine have been purchased "used", with 3 of them having seen combat in Iraq (2) and Afganistan (1). One of the ones that was in Iraq had quite a bit of finish wear and I gave it a new coat of Krylon matte black to make it "purdy" again. I've paid as low as 500 for the "rough looking" to 650 for one that could pass as new.
