Slide release
I've heard conflicting opinions from shooters of various skill levels concerning the slide release.
When you've shot a mag empty, you've taken the mag out and put a fresh one in, do you just push the slide release and let the slide slam forward or do you grab it with your hand and sort of ease it forward? |

It depends how I feel, sometimes I ease it forward, sometimes I'll let it go. Im not sensitive or partial to either!

Would releasing the slide without easing it forward on an empty chamber possibly damage the gun? Or is this just something that concerns the older 1911s but is a moot point with modern guns such as the XD?

to eliminate the chance of riding the slide forward and causing feeding problems, i just use the slide release.

With loaded mag let it slam home that's what it was deigned to do. Empty I tend to ride it. YMMV

You can't hurt the gun by letting the slide go forward on its own power. You can cause problems by riding the slide forward. So don't baby the slide.

I personally just pull it back and let it rack like you would be loading that first round. I don't ride it forward just let it go. I am not gentle with it either. Thats just going to lead to a feed problem.

When chambering a round, I slingshot the slide. And no, don't baby it forward. You can't hurt the gun by letting the spring take the slide forward.
Oh, and it's a slide stop, not a slide release. |

depends on the situation, if I am range shooting for fun I will ease the slide on any auto forward, just seems less stressful to the wapon. When I am training I let it slam, as in the field you will not want to waste any time easing the slide up, especially if rounds are headed your way.
