Neither.

I grab the rear serrations on the slide, pull back and release allowing it to slam forward.

"babying" the slide forward is asking for a failure to go into battery

reaching for the slide stop is dangerous IMHO because in a gunfight your fine motor skills may not be quite up to par.

I just let is slide...unless it is unloaded. Then I will ease it.

never shoot mag empty. If you do, use the catch or your hand, just make sure the it slams shut and goes all the way into battery. Never slam it shut on an empty chamber
