I may have misinterpreted your post. I am only talking about empty mags\no mags.
I was talking about problems from riding it up when chambering a round.

There are some guns like 1911's and guns set up as race guns with very sensitive triggers that can be affected by dropping the slide on an empty chamber. But ordinary modern production semi-autos like XDs or Glocks should not be harmed in any way.

With these guns it is simply a bad habit to get into to ride the slide because you might ride it at the wrong time and find that your gun doesn't work when it absolutely needs to work.

Anyways... I always have rounds in the chamber unless I am cleaning the gun so dropping the slide on an empty chamber is something I know little or nothing about!! LOL!

Empty gun, ride it home.

From slide lock I use the slide lock to release the slide.

BUT! I do my damnedest to never let that slide lock back in competition (USPSA, not IDPA). The fastest reload is done with a round still in the chamber. I bet I only use the slide lock less than once per match. Never run the gun dry!

I was always told it is easier to sling shot than to try to find a little ass button under stress. With that being said I always hit the button. You aren't going to hurt the gun by doing so.

I'm writing from Finland and here the term for said object translates directly to slide release so pardon for the incorrect term.

Anyway, the general consensus seems to be to ride the slide when the chamber is empty and just let it slam when it's not. This being my first and only gun I'd like to keep it intact and functional as long as possible.

I was taught not to use the slide release. I pull the slide back, which releases it. Muscle memory for when you need to fix a jam.

its most likely a moot point but i also find it alot easier to push down the slide release when you hold the slide. and i figured its not going to hurt anything. i think on cheaper pistols or ones that might already have some sort of flaw in the metal that after MANY MANY times you COULD break something.

let me put it this way if someone does it to my pistol i don't say anything. but if it was something i was concerned about i would ask them not to do it again
