The XD does not have a slide release, it has a slide stop.

That said, use whichever you feel more comfortable with, but, for the love of God... never ride the slide home gently (unless it's on an empty chamber of course)

Yeah dang it, "slide stop"!

And don't ever use it to "release" the slide, because then Springfield would have to reprint all of their literature!

When at the range I tend to do alittle of both... Well..I use the slide stop to release it, and I sling shot it. Just sort of whatever mood strikes me at the time. I probably sling shot it more than using the stop lever though. I never ease the slide forward when chamerbing a round. If its ok for the slide to cycle and slam forward on the next live round, then its ok for me to slam it home too.

Like others said, i tend to ease it alittle more when its empty.

Every time you fire an auto the slide slams back then forward to chamber a round. Why would loading it be more stressful on the gun?

If the slide stop/release/whatever the hell you want to call it works for you, then use it.

I honestly don't see the point in everyone getting worked up over semantics on this particular issue.

One thumb is easier and faster than two hands.

True, but one thumb is useless in clearance drills

Sorry, but I think that is wrong. How can you damage the slide by riding it? I have heard multiple gunsmiths say that you should not drop a slide on an empty chamber.

Obviously, I will drop it when feeding a round from the mag, but I cringe when I see people slamming empty slides home.

I may have misinterpreted your post. I am only talking about empty mags\no mags.

I'm pretty sure he meant you are likely to cause problems riding the slide home "while chambering", with which I agree 100%

That's what I understood.
Agreed never drop the slide on an empty chamber.
Riding the slide while loading a round can cause feed problems and failure to go into battery.
