I picked .45 Auto becuase it was the first caliber gun I ever bought but I believe either caliber is OK. Of course because of ammo prices I think the 9mm has a huge edge.

I had a 9mm until a HUGE man tried to follow my wife into the house one night; we lived in a not so good area then. I pulled out my, then, Beretta 9000s 9mm to deter the fella.

He left. I bought the XD .45ACP

I was concerned with the weapon of choice and the round. Both needed to be more reliable.

You had to go there with this one didn't you...

I picked the .45 because that is my first and only pistol. Im sure the 9mm is fine, and ammo is cheaper but I really like my 45.

I said .45, however I d@mn sure wouldn't want to go up against either one!

My only handgun dedicated to personal protection use (because both of them could be used for that) is a .45, but I'm looking at a 9mm too.

9mm. After seeing all of the recent ballistics threads showing expansion of .45 and 9mm, as well as other rounds, the 9mm seemed to expand to nearly the same size diameter of the other, larger rounds. I don't feel undergunned when carrying my 9mms. Also, I'd rather carry 30 rds of 9mm over 14rds of .45...using an extra mag, of course. However, I have every intention of owning another 1911!!! Wish I never had to sell mine; it's such an awesome gun.

I don't think cost should come into the equation when evaluating a tool that is going to be used to save your life. In my opinion, the importance of the characteristics of a round go in this order: Penetration, capacity in the mag, recoil (ability for accurate multiples), and diameter of unexpanded bullet (you cant count on it to expand). It's a close call, as 9mm gets you roughly equal penetration, more capacity, and less recoil. With most guns, I would prefer 9mm. However, with the XD, you still get 14 rounds of 45 and the recoil is definitely managable! I think .45 is worth the trade off in the XD..

A 9mm may expand, but a .45 doesn't shrink
